Now we know about these offensive mistakes and vow never to repeat them again!
Of course, there is no ideal interior decor. The design of each house is too individual and depends on many different factors. But still, the basic rules and principles exist. Here are the most common mistakes, which are quite easy to avoid if you know about them in advance. Avoid these missteps and your interior will look much better: whoever is warned is armed!
ARRANGING ALL FURNITURE ALONG THE WALLS
Thoughtful planning is the key to the success of the entire interior. When arranging furniture, free at least part of the walls, this will help to avoid the impression of a “showroom”. For example, you can put a large chair in the corner of the room or a sofa in the center of the living room.
MIXING TOO MANY DIFFERENT SHADES
Fill the room with many different shades – and it will resemble a market. The following rule will help to avoid this mistake: no more than three local colors at the same time! If you are confident in your abilities, use additional shades – close tones derived from these three colors. The result will not keep you waiting – the interior will look more harmonious.
AN ABUNDANCE OF DIFFERENT DECORS AND ORNAMENTS
We avoid variegation by applying only one of these two points:
- Different ornaments in identical shades
- Identical ornaments in different colors!
MONOCHROME INTERIOR IN TOTAL LOOK STYLE
Sterile white canteen, like in a hospital? Such a decision is a categorical no! Except when the furniture is very original, and the rest of the space is also quite “active”. To add volume and relief to a monochrome setting, think about interspersing color and various textures.

EXCESSIVE CONCENTRATION OF OBJECTS
Overusing the amount of decor and furniture is a way to ruin an interior. Such a mistake can be made almost everywhere: a large coffee table is replaced by three folding mini-tables, a collection of family photos in frames stands as a wall, four types of baskets for things and toys in a children’s room, etc. Be careful not to “suffocate” your interior, stick to the golden rule – less is more!
CONSIDER THAT EACH PIECE OF FURNITURE HAS ONLY ONE PURPOSE
And what if a pouffe or banquette is turned into a night table? Or make a zoning partition between the kitchen and the living room out of a bookcase? Change of purpose is one of the most effective and fashionable techniques of modern decoration. Feel free to come up with additional features for your furniture.
UNDERESTIMATE THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER LIGHTING
Bright lamps have the same power as most diffused ones. Reduce their intensity in all rooms, according to your needs. Let there be many lamps and each one is used depending on the situation. For example, a ceiling chandelier works when you need to light up the entire space, and fixtures with medium and low light settings accompany a reading chair or dining table.
USE “DECEPTION” THAT DOES NOT DECEIVE
Panoramic wallpapers with a view of the “Italian street” or loft-style brickwork never decorate the interior and definitely give a cheap look. Just a beautiful wallpaper or a real brick wall is a thousand times preferable to its fake image.
FORGET ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPORTIONS
Big room with big furniture? No. Small room with mini sofa and XXL coffee table? Also no. Proportions are very important in decorating. Mix them only if you have large volumes of space. Conversely, if your space is limited, use small “trend” items, they will help create harmony.
