5 common mistakes in choosing and placing mirrors

Choosing the wrong frame and not foreseeing your psychological comfort – we list these and other mistakes when placing an accessory.

1. The frame does not match the interior

Mirrors are often knocked out of the interior due to an unsuccessfully selected frame. For example, in the classics, a carved wooden frame looks good, but such a neoclassical frame will overload, especially if there is already decorated furniture nearby.

How to do better

If in doubt, it is better to limit yourself to a simple solid color frame or even do without it. For example, in the Scandinavian style of minimalism, a mirror without a frame is quite acceptable.

Also, pay attention to color. Black is almost always appropriate. Or you can choose a frame in the color of the walls, a couple of tones darker or lighter.

Another important aspect is the material. Plastic looks the worst, it is better to choose wood or metal. There are also unusual solutions, such as a leather belt holder.

2. Size is not proportional to nearby objects

A mirror can be lost against the background of a sofa, cabinet, or sink if, when choosing it, they were not guided by its size and proportions. In this case, it will be annoying, and the interior will seem ill-conceived.

How to do better

Above a large sofa, I would like to see a horizontal mirror of the same size or a combination of several small ones. In the bathroom, it is important that the mirror is the same width as the sink or slightly narrower. In the hallway, the floor elongated model harmoniously looks due to the proximity to the door and wardrobe.

3. No interaction with the interior

If a decorative mirror just hangs on a bare wall and nothing is reflected in it, it will look boring and out of place.

How to do better

Mirrors for the decoration should interact with the surrounding space. Place them on the wall where the direct rays of the sun fall. Or so that they reflect the furniture opposite, curtains or posters.

With the help of a reflective surface, you can even make a narrow elongated room visually wider. To do this, it should have a reflection of the wall opposite furniture or decor.

4. Incorrect distance to furniture and floor

A person will reflexively try to see his reflection, being next to the mirror. And if in order to see his face, he has to bend down or stand on tiptoe, the mirror will quickly become annoying.

How to do better

Place mirrors about 1/3 the height of the wall. It is also important to consider that this is an independent element, and it should not be hung close to large furniture. Always leave at least 20-30 cm of empty space around the frame. The only exception can be a gallery of posters and paintings, which included a mirror.

5. Psychological comfort not taken into account

When choosing a place to install a mirror, you need to take into account the psychological comfort of those living in the house. For example, many do not like to sleep on a bed that is reflected in the mirror. And it can even scare small children. Or an ill-placed mirror in the hallway will startle someone who goes to the bathroom or the kitchen at night in the dark.

It is also important to consider lighting near the wall with a mirror. If the light is cold, sharp, and directed strictly from top to bottom, all the imperfections of the skin and figure will be visible in the reflection.

How to do better

Skin or figure flaws will be invisible with soft warm side light. And so that the mirror does not frighten or embarrass anyone, try moving it around the room or corridor, choosing a good location.
