Simple Bedroom: Design Secrets, Matching Colors, and Styles

Simple doesn’t mean boring, and beautiful doesn’t mean expensive. We will tell you how to decorate a bedroom on a budget so that it is cozy and comfortable to relax in it.

The bedroom is the most private room in the house. Here we relax, recuperate, and can be alone with ourselves. Which means. And the atmosphere should be appropriate. But to create a feeling of comfort and coziness, it is not necessary to come up with a complex design. In this article, we share ideas for decorating a simple bedroom that everyone will repeat.

Choice of style

Not all directions are suitable for the design of a simple bedroom interior. For example, classical, Art Deco, or loft will not be the best choice. But some other styles are just made for a concise design.

Scandinavian style

Scandinavians know better than anyone else how to design a practical and simple interior that will be cozy.

The main markers of this style are:

  • A light palette with a predominance of achromatic colors and pastel shades.
  • Creating coziness with natural materials (wood, stone, rattan, cotton, wool, etc.);
  • Maximum amount of natural light.
  • Absence of clutter, rejection of excessive décor.
  • Laconic furniture of simple shapes, emphasis on functionality and comfort.

All this makes Scandi the optimal style for a cost-effective and simple bedroom interior. This style is well suited for small rooms. Below is a photo of simple bedrooms in the Scandinavian spirit.

Modern Style

Modern style is more of a collective name. This includes a number of trends: from minimalism to eco and loft. But when decorating an apartment, you don’t want to drive yourself into a strict framework, so modern interiors often mix several styles at once, united by common principles: rationality, restraint, and functionality. A modern interior should be comfortable. This is taken into account when decorating the bedroom. Materials, layouts, and colors can be of any kind, depending on the tastes and wishes of the residents.

Minimalism

With the trend towards conscious consumption, minimalism has become one of the most relevant trends in design. Its characteristic features are monochrome, with predominance of gray, white, and black; a minimum of furniture and almost complete lack of décor; emphasis on the shapes and strict lines of the furniture; absence of variegated ornaments, the predominance of monochromatic textures; Maximum free space and air.

Country

The philosophy of minimalism is not for everyone. If you want to surround yourself with cozy things with history and get closer to nature, then you can decorate the bedroom in a country style. It includes several directions: Provence; shabby chic; rustic style, etc.

Such interiors are characterized by a light pastel palette (from white and mint to all kinds of shades of beige), natural ornaments, and a large amount of décor. These styles are made for vintage furniture and antique finishes. The presence of live plants is mandatory.

Neoclassicism

The classical style cannot be called simple, but its modern adaptation — neoclassicism — may well be democratic. This trend is also characterized by noble materials and colors, symmetry, the absence of flashy shades and cheap plastic. But at the same time, it is not necessary to put oak parquet on the floor and hang paintings in gilded frames on the walls.

Any laconic furniture of simple shapes will do, as well as a few high-quality accessories for accents. It is desirable to place the bed so that it is the center of the composition, and several objects should be symmetrically placed around it: for example, bedside tables, hanging sconces, posters, or paintings. Patterns in decoration or textiles are acceptable but restrained. A simple abstraction, a non-flashy floral ornament, a check or a stripe will do.

Room layout

This is the most important stage, which determines whether the bedroom will be not only cozy, but also comfortable.

Things to consider when planning:

  • First of all, we realistically estimate the size of the room. If you have a small number of squares at your disposal, it is unlikely that you will be able to place a kingsize bed, a wardrobe, and a make-up table on them. Analyze your lifestyle and space opportunities, highlight priorities, and give up unnecessary things.
  • If the room will include several zones — for example, a sleeping place and an office or living room — you need to think about their visual separation. The smaller the room, the “easier” zoning should be. Classic techniques include an open shelving unit, and glass or wooden partitions that let in light, different colors, and finishes.
  • The centerpiece of any bedroom is the bed. Therefore, we start with the layout. How big should it be? Where are the windows located and which side do they face? Where is the door located? The bed should be placed in such a way that there is room for passage around it, and the morning sun does not hit the eyes. It is also better not to place a mirror in front of the bed (psychologically it can be uncomfortable).
  • Planning storage systems. It can be a wall-to-wall wardrobe, racks, and chests of drawers. If space is scarce, then additional storage can be organized under the bed by taking a model with drawers or installing it on a podium.
  • When the arrangement of furniture is clear, we immediately think over the location of sockets in advance so that there are enough of them for all the necessary appliances and they do not end up in completely different places where planned.

Colors

Simple design is associated primarily with neutral colors.

First of all, the elements of such a palette are easy to combine with each other. Secondly, if you want updates, instead of a full-fledged renovation, you can simply add bright colors or completely change the mood of the room with the help of textiles and décor.

The main question is light or dark colors. The answer is not so obvious, as it all depends on the taste of the hosts.

Light tones make the room look bigger, while dark tones make it look bigger. The same goes for cool and warm shades, respectively. If you are faced with the task of visually enlarging the room, then a light cold base will perfectly cope with this task – for example, shades of white, gray or blue.

Different colors have different effects on our psyche. Bright colors (red, lemon yellow, fuchsia, light green, etc.) activate the brain and invigorate, muted pastels, on the contrary, calm down. An abundance of blue and purple can cause depressive thoughts. Choose a color scheme based on the functions that the bedroom should perform and your associations with it. For example, deep dark tones (black, red, purple, blue) set a romantic mood and create an intimate atmosphere, while light ones are associated with purity and freshness.

If you want to add a sense of privacy to the recreation area, you can use muted and diluted shades of green, brown, and blue as basic ones.

The Secrets of Simple Bedroom Design

Finishing

Walls, floors, and ceilings are designed as simply as possible, without unnecessary décor.

For the walls, you can choose paint, decorative plaster, or wallpaper. If the area needs to be visually expanded, then it is better to use light colors in the decoration. And make the ceiling white and smooth, 1-2 shades lighter than the walls.

You can put laminate or cork on the floor, and if your budget allows, engineered board or vinyl quartz. Tiles or porcelain tiles are rarely used in the bedroom, as they are quite cold materials and the floor should be pleasant to step on with bare feet.

Furniture

If you want a budget-friendly bedroom interior, then you can save money on the bed in the first place.

How to do this without sacrificing the quality of the furniture:

  • Abandon a complex design in favor of a simple model.
  • Choosing a bed without a lifting mechanism will significantly reduce the cost.
  • Decorate the headboard yourself, abandoning expensive models.

By the way, you can even make a base with your own hands — for example, from pallets, as in the first photos in the gallery.

There should not be a lot of other furniture, only the most necessary things. First of all, it is a storage system, usually a wardrobe or chest of drawers. You can put an open rail for clothes, but remember that keeping things in plain sight requires neatness and the habit of regular cleaning.

If there is still space in the room, you can equip any functional areas you need: a reading corner, a place to relax (an armchair or ottoman will suffice) or work. It is better to choose furniture in the simplest possible design, without complex silhouettes and decorative elements. In basic colors that are easy to combine with other interior elements. It can be brown, beige, white, or gray.

Decor

A simple interior shouldn’t have too much décor, but you can’t do without it at all – it’s the details that complete the look and give the room character.

How can you decorate the bedroom:

  • A few posters or favorite photos are on the wall.
  • Mirror in a figured or, conversely, minimalistic frame.
  • Indoor plants are a win-win way to “liven up” an interior.
  • Candles and a couple of figurines, for example, from memorable trips.
  • A garland with light bulbs or a word catcher above the headboard.
  • Flowers or dried flowers in a vase.
  • Cosmetics in beautiful packages.

Textile

It is the textiles that make the recreation area cozy, so you need to pay special attention to it in the bedroom.

This effect is made up of two factors:

  • Tactile sensations – all fabrics in the room should be pleasant to the touch, natural if possible.
  • Layering is the secret of coziness not only in the materials but also in their combination. A blanket over a blanket, a few decorative pillows, and one or more small overlapping carpets will create the feeling of a cozy nest.

Also, textiles can become a bright accent in the overall neutral range. Any natural shades look advantageous: terracotta, green, blue, brick, ochre, yellow, eggplant, etc. And if you want to create the feeling of resting on a cloud, choose snow-white bed linen.

Another key element is the curtains. If you need complete darkness for sleeping, install blackouts with 100% light protection on the windows. It is better to choose curtains and tulle that are neutral in color and not layered so as not to overload the space.

Illumination

Lighting plays an important role in the perception of the seating area.

The light should not be blindingly bright and too cold in temperature. Opt for soft, diffused light that will create a cozy atmosphere. Multiple lighting sources are needed. Which one, the lifestyle decides?

If you like to read before going to bed, then you can’t do without a table lamp or bedside sconces. Think also about how much time you spend in this room. If it serves only as a place to sleep, then it makes sense to abandon the general overhead light altogether in favor of local sources. If it is also a mini-office, then you need to provide sufficient artificial lighting.

The main principle is to mentally “impose” illumination on your way of life. This way you will understand which light sources you can’t do without, and what you can give up and thus save money.
