6 nursery renovation mistakes you might regret

Among such mistakes are incorrect zoning and lighting, furniture for growth, and too bright colors. What other omissions are possible when repairing a nursery – we explain in our article.

The ideal children’s room is comfortable, functional, beautiful, made of quality materials and adaptable for different ages. But in practice, such a balance is not always achieved. Often, when repairing a nursery, parents make mistakes. For example, they make prints that are too childish, which in a few years will be irrelevant.

1. Wrong zoning

One of the most common mistakes when renovating a children’s room is incorrect zoning. If the room is a single space for sleeping, playing, studying and relaxing, it becomes chaotic, and the child’s attention constantly switches from one activity to another.

Zoning, on the other hand, allows you to competently organize the space, increase the concentration of the child’s attention and give him the opportunity to comfortably relax and play. Another plus of zoning is that it is easier to keep order in the nursery with its help. Therefore, designers recommend dividing a children’s room into zones (for study, games and recreation) and, if possible, do this at the stage of developing a room design project.

It is better to zone with furniture and lighting than to build bulky structures that will then have to be demolished. “In large rooms, if desired, in addition to the main areas, you can also organize a sports corner, a place for creativity, or a dressing room. In small rooms, you can use transforming furniture, ”said Elizabeth. The effect of separate zones can be achieved by painting the walls in different colors or dividing the space, in addition to furniture, also with partitions, added architect-designer Anna.

Designers are advised to pay special attention to the working area – it can be a table with drawers, a chair, or a workboard. Such a zone will be needed for kids to sculpt from plasticine, draw, study letters, and for schoolchildren to do their homework. The work area itself is best placed near a window for good natural light. But you should not forget about additional light sources. “Artificial light should be bright enough and well (without abrupt transitions) illuminate the workplace. The tone of the light should be warm, this will add coziness to the room and make the microclimate in it more comfortable,” said Elizabeth.

2. Poor storage systems

Another omission when repairing a nursery is ill-conceived storage systems. In children’s rooms, there is always a large concentration of toys and things, so it is necessary to provide where to store all this. According to Anna, it is better to store large items on open shelves, and small items in textile bags, boxes, or transparent plastic boxes. “Take into account the height and age of the child, the wardrobe can be designed with a bar adjustable for growth so that the child can dress comfortably,” the designer advised.

The system for storing clothes in the children’s room can be organized according to a simple principle – put things of the same category together and select a linen compartment, Elizabeth added. “The use of dividers in cabinets will significantly increase capacity. Hang seasonal clothes on hangers and put them on shelves, and the rest can be put away in vacuum bags until the right time, ”the designer recommended.

If you do not neglect these recommendations, then it will be easier to keep order in the room. In addition, with a convenient arrangement of racks and storage boxes, the child will be able to independently put the toys in place.

3. Poor quality finish

Among the mistakes that are common when repairing a nursery is the use of low-quality finishing materials. They can be not only short-lived but also harm the health of children – for example, cause allergies. We are talking about cheap synthetic materials (varnishes, paints that emit toxins), cheap laminate or linoleum, and artificial wool in textiles.

For example, many parents believe that a carpet is a great option for a nursery, as it is an inexpensive, soft, and warm material, Elizabeth noted. But this coating absorbs odors well, and dust and dirt accumulate in the pile. This can cause allergies, especially in young children. Cleaning the carpet is not easy, a regular vacuum cleaner will not be enough. Special tools and brushes are needed to get rid of germs and bacteria. Therefore, it is better not to use carpet in the nursery, the designer noted. “It is advisable not to use gypsum plasterboard (gypsum plasterboard sheets – they absorb moisture, thereby worsening the microclimate in the room) and dense non-woven or vinyl wallpaper as a building material,” added Anna.

For a children’s room, experts recommend using environmentally friendly and more durable materials that will not lose their properties over time and will last for many years.

4. Too bright colors and too childish prints

Often, when renovating a children’s room, parents choose bright colors or prints that can quickly get boring and cause increased excitability. Designers are advised to give preference to a neutral range, and color accents can be placed using furniture or decor elements.

Often parents use prints that are too childish (princess castle, superheroes, cat-dogs), and sometimes they realize their childhood dream. “For example, in childhood, they dreamed of a big ship on the wall, clouds, or stars. Now they arrange it in their children’s room. But such an interior usually not only does not take into account the interests of the child himself but also quickly gets bored, ”said Peter.

Or, on the contrary, parents choose the interior for the future, the designer continued. Such a room may not differ from the space of an adult, but the furniture in it is also chosen for growth. For example, a bed that is too large, which turns out to be non-functional and also takes up a lot of space, Peter added.

In the interior of the nursery, it is better to abandon bulky items and furniture, it is dangerous for the health of the child, who can fall on this furniture or turn it over, continued Elizaveta Rodionova. To avoid this, furniture can be attached to the wall or floor. For the same reason, it is better not to use breakable decor elements in the nursery.

5. Wrong lighting

Often an omission in the nursery is incorrect and insufficient lighting. According to the designer of Domeo, it is better to use warm main light, and in addition to it, decorative multi-level lighting. Separately, it is necessary to illuminate the working area. “It is imperative to take into account whether the child is right-handed or left-handed, this will help to correctly position the light source in the study area,” Anna noted.

If you wish, you can think of various lighting scenarios: for games, study, evening lighting, and for sleeping (if the child falls asleep in the light). “Do not forget about the child’s sleep, blackout curtains will help create the necessary atmosphere for daytime sleep,” the designer recommended.

But equipment and dangerous wires are best minimized. All communications must be hidden away from children’s eyes and hands or raised to a safe height. “For example, hold it under a baseboard or fix it with masking tape behind pieces of furniture. Do not leave network openings without plugs. The plugs can be matched to the color of the sockets so as not to focus the attention of the child, ”said the Elizabeth.

6. Microclimate

Often, parents do not attach sufficient importance to indoor air exchange, although clean air flow is very important for children. Even at the stage of repair, designers advise thinking about the ventilation system, perhaps making a supply system, if the budget allows. “If the windows overlook the roadway, then if there is an air supply system, you will not have to open the windows when the child is sleeping, and he will not be disturbed by street noise. The supply of fresh air will improve well-being and protect the health of the child,” concluded Anna.
