Provence style living room interior: 70+ ideas and design tips

Provence is a discreet, light-filled, homely atmosphere, with peace, and tranquility. We tell you how to decorate the living room in this style by yourself.

This design will appeal to those who are tired of the minimalism of modern housing. The space of the room is imbued with comfort, and rustic motifs and filled with cute trinkets. There is no place for black color or bulkiness. The main characteristics are warm idyll and serenity. See for yourself: in the photos.

Peculiarities

French design is suitable not only for a country house but also for an ordinary apartment. With a small room, there is a risk of cluttering it with decor, but this can be avoided by using only some elements.

To create the right atmosphere, sometimes a few details are enough. One, two, or three items from the list below will transform the living room and create the necessary associations.

  • Pastel colors in decoration. White (most often basic), lilac, muted light yellow, blue, light shades of brown, turquoise, mint, soft orange, pale green, milky, beige gray.
  • Carved, forged furniture of elegant shape without massive decorating elements. The surface is often aged, and slightly worn. Upholstery – in a small flower, stripes.
  • Large windows to let in as much light as possible. The frames are white wood.
  • The abundance of fabrics in the interior: pillows, blankets, carpets, curtains, and woven runners, tablecloths. Ideally, all this is made from natural materials.
  • A lot of decorations: various figurines, candlesticks, plants, and drawings.
  • The use of vines, bricks, stone, and wood in decoration.

Interior decoration of the living room in Provence style: photos of rooms

Before filling the space with details, you must create a suitable background for them.

Ceiling

Wooden beams on the ceiling are ideal for the new design, especially if they match the color of the furniture, architraves, and window sills. Sometimes the gap between them is filled with thin boards. In rooms where there are no beams, the ceiling is plastered and painted white. Stretch fabrics and drywall do not fit well into the vintage design.

Floor

The style implies natural materials, so the most suitable option for flooring is wide slightly faded boards. Other finishing methods: parquet (lay deck), terracotta tiles (small chips look authentic), or matte porcelain stoneware. A budget option is a laminate that imitates wood.

Walls

Partitions between rooms and inside the room also do not have to be neat. Light wear and carelessness are welcome. The main thing is that it looks exactly light, and neat. Most often, the walls are covered with decorative plaster. In some parts of the room, brickwork is made and covered with a thin layer of white paint. The classic option boards. Wallpaper for the living room in the style of Provence is used less often. If this is your option, choose an unobtrusive floral coloring.

Furnishings and decor

When the background for the interior is created, it remains only to breathe life into it by adding the necessary items and decorations.

Lighting

The chosen design assumes that the room will be literally filled with light. Unfortunately, this is not always possible, so you need to organize additional lighting. Add sconces, floor lamps, and table lamps to the main chandelier. To play with French motifs, choose appliances with wicker shades, forged elements, and a flower shape.

Textile

Like everything in such an apartment, it should be light, bright, and with a touch of antiquity. Curtains – airy and translucent, so as not to interfere with daylight entering the room. The fabric can be plain, checkered, or flowered. The main thing is that it is in harmony with the upholstery and the room as a whole. Crocheted pillows and blankets are on armchairs and sofas. Tablecloths in saturated or pastel colors with floral ornaments are on the tables.

Provence style living room furniture

Most often it is wooden furniture, with an aged surface painted in white or pastel color. In the modern version, wicker rattan chairs are often found. The relaxation of the interior will be emphasized by a rocking chair. You can’t do without a round table, a “grandmother’s” chest of drawers, or cabinets on low legs in the hall. The arrangement of furniture is free, symmetry is not needed.

Decor

The final touch is decorating the room. If you like different pleasing to the eye, but not always functional things – this interior is for you. What will fit:

  • Porcelain figurines.
  • Wicker baskets.
  • Plants in hanging pots.
  • Handmade (dolls, knitwear, macrame).
  • Frames with family photos.
  • Paintings.
  • Old or decoupage boxes.
  • Carved candlesticks.
  • Large mirrors in wooden frames.
  • Bouquets of fresh flowers.
  • Antique Turks, mortars.
  • Napkins with embroidery.

You can forget about minimalism, but you should not get carried away either. Especially in small rooms – so as not to turn a gentle, cozy interior into chaos.

Living room with fireplace in Provence style

A fireplace is often installed in private houses since it will not fit into any apartment. If, nevertheless, you decide to equip such a zone in the room, try to age it as much as possible. Use stone, brick, and ceramic tiles in decoration. See what these structures look like.

Living room-kitchen in Provence style

Areas for cooking and recreation should look like a single space or be successfully combined in color. It is more rational to cover the walls in the kitchen area not with wallpaper, but with decorative plaster or wood. These materials are stronger. The floor and ceiling are no different from the main part of the hall – use parquet, boards, or laminate. But the apron can be lined with tiles or natural stone – they are easy to wash, and high temperatures and water are not afraid of them.

Difficulties may arise with household appliances. If full compliance with the rules is important, you will have to splurge on devices with the appropriate, vintage design. Hanging cupboards can be decorated with colored glass inserts, and a beautiful service can be placed on open shelves. The kitchen will be decorated with themed bright decor: bunches of dried chili peppers, garlic, or bunches of garden herbs.

It is quite simple to mark the border between the zones – put a desktop or a carved wooden partition on it.
