How to decorate dining room: 15 examples from designers and decorators

To decorate a truly ceremonial dining room, one tablecloth will not be enough. We tell you how designers achieve such an effect.

A leisurely meal in pleasant company is already a luxury. And in order to be satisfied with it every day, you need a favorable environment. For this reason, even at the stage of interior design, you need to decide whether you are ready to allocate a separate hall (in the old manner) for receptions or limit yourself to a dining area in the kitchen-living room space. Therefore, like other spaces, ceremonial dining rooms are divided into two types: separate and combined. Looking ahead, we note that designers successfully cope with both the first and second cases.

Combined

There can be many reasons for combining a dining room with a living room or kitchen, ranging from a small area of living space to the habits of the owners. For example, in the house designed by Natalia Popova, the entire first floor became an open common space with two living rooms and an elegant dining room connected to the kitchen. This is done to ensure that the premises pass one into another through wide openings-portals. Complex deep colors in each of the zones support each other, the same purpose is served by textiles: the grandeur of the dining room is given by chairs in scarlet covers on the floor, which echo the upholstery of the sofa in the living room.

And designer Timofey Veresnovsky arranged a dining room for six people in a St. Petersburg apartment. In addition to the expressive table made of solid oak (the designer created the sketch for it himself), solemnity is given to the space even on the most ordinary day by a vaulted ceiling, a mirrored portal and niches with libraries that form a classical composition.

The canteen is connected with the library and in the project of Inna Zavyalova. The designer built the public part of the apartment on the principle of enfilade. In the center of the whole apartment, Inna made a dining room, which she surrounded with books. Impressive bookcases merge with wall panels and make a wooden box out of the dining room. The fact that here you need not so much to eat as to rest, say, and low chairs in velvety upholstery.

Individual

Anyway, the area of space plays an important role here: the principle of “in close quarters, but not in the offense” does not really fit with the idea of “grandeur”. Spacious private rooms are more conducive to recreating the classic dining room. For the same reason, there are often antique pieces of furniture and decor, which refer to the times of medieval feasts at long wooden tables.

And in the house that Marina Zhukova was engaged in, an extension with a kitchen, dining room, and spa area was designed with the expectation of a three-meter table “moved” from the old house. But along with it remained another part of the old furniture, which determined the size of the premises.

Typography

Since we are talking about associations with feasts – what lush dining room will do without a fireplace? During the Middle Ages, its main function was practical – to heat a huge and cold room.

Tapestries are also sent to the same eras. So, for the dining room in one of her projects, Gulya Galeeva carefully and painstakingly chose fabrics. They are literally everywhere here – not only in the form of curtains but also in the form of tapestries. From the shades of these canvases, Galeeva chose the color for the ceiling cornices. “I like to paint architecture and add color to those details that are usually seen in white,” says the designer. “I take, for example, one of the colors of the painting or fabric that is already in the room, and use it to paint the details.” An alternative to tapestries can be wall painting or wallpaper with floral motifs. Support the idea of densely textured fabrics.

If the size of the room allows, then showcases and buffets are often placed in the front dining room. This not only gives weight to the space but also allows you not to go to the kitchen to replace a dish or glass.

Last but not least, serving. It is clear that the dishes will languish on the shelves, waiting for their time, so the fabrics are more responsible for the “grandeur” of the dining room. For example, designer Boris Dmitriev covered the table with a tablecloth made of jacquard cotton, and in the house of Alexandra Tolstoy, the table is covered with two tablecloths at once.

But you can do without a tablecloth. The main thing in the front dining room is to designate an expressive element. It can be a large table, a crystal chandelier or even a voluminous vase. Then the massive object will definitely become a point of attraction for all guests of the house.
