Stores sell different types of decorative plaster for interior wall decoration. They differ in composition, namely the connecting element. Based on consistency, the products are divided into dry powder, which must first be diluted with water, and a ready-made paste mixture. It can be immediately applied to the surface. Regardless of the type of product, it has several advantages over other finishing coatings.
Features of the material
There are several reasons why it is beneficial to use this material in any room, including the bathroom and balcony.
- Additional sound insulation. Of course, you can’t completely remove the noise, but you will create an additional barrier.
- Resistance to moisture and temperature changes.
- Leveling unevenness on the wall.
- Long service life.
- Decorative. Using simple tools you can create a variety of effects, even imitation stone.
- Possibility of wet cleaning.
- It does not absorb odors.
- And breathable.
The application of interior finishing can be carried out without problems on almost any surface. The material fits well on concrete, drywall, brick, wood, and stone.
What is the composition of decorative plaster?
Based on the type of connecting element, the coating is divided into four types.
Acrylic
A universal, elastic mixture based on acrylic resin. It can be painted any color using pigment paste. The products are sold ready-made, and packaged in buckets. It has the following properties.
- Dries quickly.
- Suitable for rooms with high humidity levels and temperature changes.
- Durable – service life up to 15 years.
- The finished surface is easy to clean.
The mixture also has three disadvantages. It ignites easily, can crack under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, and has poor vapor permeability.
Mineral
The composition of this decorative plaster includes lime, cement, mineral particles, stone chips, and clay. Below are a few features.
- The coating is most in demand because it is inexpensive and easy to apply.
- Sold in dry powder form.
- The finished layer is not afraid of moisture and frost, is resistant to abrasion, and is the most environmentally friendly of all.
- Before work, the wall must be well primed and all uneven surfaces must be puttied.
Three more advantages: fire safety, ease of maintenance, breathability. Disadvantages: fragility (maximum period – 10 years), the ability to paint only after complete drying, and low elasticity.
Silicate
The most durable type of product. The binding element in it is liquid potassium glass. The silicate type of coating is considered hazardous to health, so it is more often used for finishing facades. Repels dirt and water, and stays on the surface for up to 20 years.
Silicone
Another flexible, durable resin-based mixture. Its only drawback is the high price. Otherwise, the material is perfect for decorating the interior walls of apartments and houses. It contains various fillers, pigments, and antifungal additives. Among the advantages are:
- breathability;
- strength;
- easy care;
- moisture resistance;
- resistance to fading;
- good grip on any surface.
The coating is easy to apply and is sold ready-made, which eliminates mixing errors. Disadvantage: the wall must be pre-treated with a primer from the same manufacturer. This increases the cost of work.
Classification by texture

Mixtures also differ in the type of filler and method of application.
Structural
The composition includes granules and fibers of various sizes. They form an uneven layer.
- Lamb, fur coat. The surface is uniform, granular, or in the form of villi.
- Terrasite. Imitation of rocks.
You can create more complex patterns with rollers or spatulas, sponges, and other tools.
Venetian
Consists of marble chips, lime or polymers, plasticizers, and colored fillers. Unlike structural plasters, Venetian marble is homogeneous and the result is a smooth wall. The coating imitates marble and onyx. It is applied in several layers (from 2 to 10) onto pre-primed concrete, wood, or metal. And at the finish, they are covered with wax. This work is not easy and requires skill.
Marseille wax
After drying, the mixture becomes textured but smooth to the touch. It can recreate the pattern of stone, wood, or sandstone. In the recesses, the shade becomes more saturated, and the main surface becomes lighter. The material filler is cellulose fiber. The patterns are formed manually using a trowel or improvised means. Marseille wax is suitable for Provence, country, and other similar styles.
Bark beetle
To create such a pattern, all types of decorative plaster that contain an additive in the form of granules of different sizes are suitable. In interior decoration, fine-grained coatings are usually used. The finished surface resembles wood eaten away by wood-boring beetles. Depending on the application technique, the grooves can be located vertically, horizontally, or in a circle. The texture of bark beetles will fit into any space with any design idea: hallway, corridor, and other rooms.
Sgraffito
Consists of several multi-colored layers with a scratched pattern on top. It is cut out 5-6 hours after the composition is distributed.
Craquelure
Products that create an unusual effect of a cracked, aged surface. Suitable for any substrate: concrete, brick, wood, drywall. First, the wall is painted with acrylic paint – this is what will be visible from under the cracks. To achieve a better decorative effect, it is distributed with multidirectional strokes. Apply the mixture over the paint and leave for 3-4 hours. In some cases, it is immediately warmed up with a hairdryer.
Latex plastic
A composition with a smooth, slightly glossy texture that imitates marble or other stone. The material is very moisture-resistant and elastic. The pattern is obtained using tinting.
Wet silk
Thanks to mother-of-pearl particles, it resembles the shimmer of flowing fabric. Wet silk is often used in the design of the kitchen, bedroom, and living room.
Sea breeze
Rough coating with fine-grained sand and pearlescent dust.
Using a regular monolithic composition, you can create a texture with various patterns: wave, dune, furrows, and shading. They are made using sponges, rollers, brushes, toothed tools, and film.
How to choose decorative plaster for different rooms?
You need to choose products based on the characteristics of the room in which the renovation is being carried out. For example, for a corridor, hallway, kitchen, and bathroom, silicone or acrylic mixtures would be an ideal option, as they are moisture-resistant and easy to apply.
The first option is preferable since this material is vapor permeable. In living rooms, you can experiment with different compositions. If the mixture is granular, you need to pay attention to the parameters of the granules. The larger the room, the larger the particles. In small rooms, a wall with a large texture will look inharmonious.
