Wabi-sabi aesthetics at Shanghai’s Donggang Chengfu Hotel

Located on Shanghai’s Changxing Island, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the journey to Donggang Chengfu is imbued with a rustic aesthetic: cozy village streets lined with flowers and trees, enchanting silky sand beaches, and stunning sea views. Designers from the Shanghai Light and Shadow Design Bureau, when decorating the interiors of this hotel complex, to bring into the space an atmosphere of elegance born from simplicity, were inspired by a poetic image – the reflection of the moon on the surface of the water at night.

The entrance area gives the impression of a comfortable, calm space, and the palette of natural materials, consisting of subtle colors, creates a clean and simple aesthetic. Large arched French windows allow plenty of natural sunlight, creating an atmosphere that is both bright and tranquil.

The living room, shrouded in a play of light and shadow, contains a minimal amount of furniture and artwork made from organic materials: rattan, cream stone, and unpainted wood. Tactility and pleasant shades encourage visitors to relax, whether drinking tea, reading a book, or simply contemplating the view from the window.

The authors of the project managed to achieve a relaxing atmosphere through the use of simple, concise shapes and textures. The rooms are filled with natural light and arranged to highlight their best qualities. Raw wood and rattan, natural colors, and natural textures have been combined into a contemporary design concept, making the hotel a place where guests can relax in a relaxed atmosphere, enjoying the aesthetics, comfort, and functionality of the designers’ solutions.

When decorating the bedrooms, the authors of the project paid special attention to accents and details. The general concept of the rooms is based on the philosophy of wabi-sabi – minimalist aesthetics in furniture and decoration, natural materials, and simple natural colors. Thanks to the skillful combination of these elements, it was possible to achieve a sense of harmony, which allows hotel guests to have a quality break from the hustle and bustle of city life.

It was important to create a cozy atmosphere in the hotel bedrooms and utility rooms, filling them with soft, eye-pleasing textures. For this, the designers used natural wood and cream shades. Carefully placed, rounded furniture and artwork contrast with the straight, graphic elements of the space and draw attention. The highest quality mattresses and bedding allow guests to truly enjoy their sleep.

One of the highlights of the hotel is the children’s area, a place that allows children of different ages to be occupied with educational leisure at any time of the day. The children’s playground on the second and third floors is designed with the theme of the underwater world and invites children into a colorful universe inspired by a marine theme. Blue and white bubble balls, wavy decorations, exquisite giant shells, starfish, seaweed murals, and more bring the space to life, immersing children in the mysteries of the vast ocean. The fourth floor, inspired by the starry sky, is decorated in a futuristic aesthetic and houses a whole collection of astronomy-related items. Children can look up to see a simulated night sky, and several powerful telescopes give them an unforgettable experience of observing reality.

A bunk bed that allows you to play and relax, at the same time, is an ideal space for children to spend time with their parents. While maintaining laconicism in the design of children’s rooms, the authors of the project, with the help of such a whimsical piece of furniture, brought liveliness and playfulness into the interior, which corresponds to the space intended for little guests.

In the hotel’s restaurant area, the designers continue to develop the Mediterranean style and combine it with Chinese elements, such as simple wooden chairs and tables. The layout has been thought out to provide guests with maximum comfort while creating a calm, balanced atmosphere. Here, visitors can enjoy a unique combination of Mediterranean and Chinese cuisine for an unforgettable experience, whether it’s a family dinner or a get-together with friends.
