Patricia Urquiola: a long-awaited hotel on Lake Como

Hotel Il Sereno on the eastern shore of Lake Como is the brainchild of designer and architect Patricia Urquiola. The dizzying panoramas of the Italian Alps and the clear mountain water of these places have long attracted the European beau monde. Against the backdrop of sumptuous summer residences and neoclassical palaces in Como, Il Sereno stands out for its clean architecture and modern interiors. This time the famous Spaniard took part in all the details of the project. The facade of the building consists of semi-open view loggias, and a garden has been grown on the roof, designed by the Italian architect Terragni. “What guests see everywhere — water, rocks, greenery, yachts — is reflected in the interior,” says Urquiola. “I tried to give the rooms the individual character of a private home.”

During the construction, only local stone of gray shades was used, and walnut panels dominate in the decoration. Of course, Urquiola actively promoted her rich portfolio of achievements – furniture from Cassina, Kettal, Molteni & C, B&B Italia, and Moroso. Door handles (Olivari) were created on special order for the hotel, Axor/Hansgrohe faucets were chosen for the bathrooms, and lighting was from Flos. The vertical garden was built by inventive Parisian designer Patrick Blanc. The restaurant is made by Milanese – Michelin chef Andrea Burton prepares a menu that offers local Lombard cuisine along with Valtellina wines.
