Wooden slats in the interior (50 photos)

What material is able to perform two functions at once: functional and decorative? We suggest: wooden slats. Their use will be discussed in our article.

Wooden slats in the interior of a house or apartment are a great technique not only in terms of style but also practice. They can be used as partitions for zoning and as decoration for walls and ceilings. We talk about these and other ideas on the example of the work of designers.

Finishing Features

Wood slats, planks, lamellas, and baffles are all the names of one universal material. It is suitable for finishing any room: from the living room to the bathroom and is used even in landscape design. True, with some reservations.

The most popular species for the manufacture of decorative slats is pine. Of the obvious advantages: are price and strength, but there is also a minus – moisture absorption. In order for the material to serve for a long time, it must be coated with a special impregnation. Then you can avoid drying and swelling. But designers still do not recommend using pine decor in rooms with high humidity – for example, in the bathroom. As an alternative, you can consider MDF, which is also cheaper, as well as beech and oak – from natural counterparts.

What is important to consider when working with this material?

First, the styling. Lamellas are good in modern spaces, suitable for Scandinavian and loft. Dosed they can be used in minimalism. But in neoclassical designs, they are used less often, rather as an exception.

Secondly, the coverage area. The larger it is, the stricter the architecture of the space will be. In relaxed designs, it is better not to get carried away with such accents.

Finally, thirdly, determine how you will use the planks: vertically or horizontally. Their geometry can visually adjust the proportions of the room. Vertical wooden slats in the interior will make the walls and ceiling higher, while horizontal ones will make them wider.

Another advantage of the material is its diversity. And this is not only the shape, wide or thin, but also the color. In most cases, designers prefer natural tones, both light and dark. They add the softness characteristic of wood to the design. But in more strict or “characteristic” rooms, painted baffles also look great. Just such can fit well into neoclassical or eclectic spaces.

Examples of using

Kitchen

I must say, wooden slats in the interior of the kitchen themselves are rare. It is difficult to imagine a backsplash or furniture finished in this way. Yet this is the prerogative of the combined spaces of the kitchen and dining room. And here the designers have a couple of suggestions.

The first way is as an accent of a dining room or a recreation group. This technique is usually used in medium-sized spaces. In this case, the slats perform an exclusively decorative function. The width of the coating is chosen based on the area of the dining room or furniture: the larger it is, the wider the decor can be.

The second is for zoning. If the kitchen is large and you want to separate the dining area from the working area, but at the same time maintain lightness and airiness, this technique is for you. The main advantage of slats is that they do not block natural light and do not overload the room, unlike a plasterboard wall.

Wooden slats in the interior of the living room

By analogy with the zoning of the working area and the dining room, with the help of such a wall, you can separate the kitchen from the living room. This is a shared space. There are no special secrets here, the wall is usually located between the sofa and the bar or set. In the same way, you can divide the living room itself into zones, for example, allocate a work space or play space for children.

In the decor of the living room, the use of slats is a trend in recent years, although some designers call it outgoing. They look more geometric than the same panels made of wood or MDF.

If the living room is spacious, you can make the most of them. And pay attention to the color, designers do not always use natural shades. If you match them to the color of the walls, the design will become even easier.

Where is this decor most often used?

  • In the TV area. Thus, you can allocate space near the TV without overloading the wall.
  • Near the sofa. A good finishing option when he stands with his back to the wall.

Bedroom

In the interior of the bedroom, wooden slats are usually placed on the focal wall – at the head of the bed. Natural textures are one of the brightest trends in the design of this room.

Pay attention to the combination of slats and headboard. Designers use the most simple models with a soft or hard headboard. Thus, the design does not look overloaded with decor.

The second way to introduce wood trim is to focus on the opposite wall. With its help, a TV zone is allocated, if such is provided in the living room. In addition, the external finishing of the dressing room with slats looks good when the room is combined with the bedroom.

Hallway

If you like the idea of vertical or horizontal slats, but you are not yet ready to use them in a large area, take a closer look at the entrance space. Wooden slats fit well into the interior of the hallway. Designers use them to allocate open storage space, including in a niche. Hooks fit very organically into this geometry. If the wall is narrow, try placing the bars horizontally – this will adjust the area a little.

Kids Bedroom

Another room, in the interior of which you can successfully fit a partition made of wooden slats, is a nursery. This is the division of space for two children, and the designation of functional areas in the room for one. In the first case, everything is standard: a wall separates the sections of the room for each baby.

The second use case is more interesting. Pay attention to the photo below. The designer used a nice technique to highlight the study part of the room – wood around the perimeter, including the ceiling. It turned out to be a very organic hint of the study area, plus a decorative window frame. But here the height and width of the walls are important. In rooms with low ceilings, this technique will not look good, it will create the feeling of a box.
