Comfort and space: classic elements in a modern interior

Through the efforts of the architect, a strict layout, elements of decor, and a palette typical of the facades of the Northern capital brought classical harmony into the modern environment.

With customers, a married couple of middle age, the architect has repeatedly collaborated, and the atmosphere of mutual understanding helped to fulfill all the wishes. The main conditions were the convenience and spaciousness of the interiors, echoing the external environment. It required a living room combined with a kitchen-dining room, separate master and guest bedrooms (the latter – in case adult children visit), a dressing room, and a laundry room. The color scheme suggested gray tones and brown-beige shades.

Redevelopment

The external outlines of the apartment resemble the letter L. The load-bearing inner wall divides the dwelling into an almost square volume (one of its walls has an entrance door) and an elongated rectangle in which there are two rooms with windows facing opposite side and a bathroom connecting these rooms narrow corridor. The latter was slightly expanded due to the bathroom, otherwise, the layout in this part of the apartment remained unchanged. The bathroom at the entrance area was slightly reduced and a small laundry room was designed next to it, the area of the room adjacent to the hallway was reduced by arranging a dressing room in it. Now, from a small corridor, an open opening leads to the studio, from which there is a free passage to the “tambour” in front of the private rooms and access to the balcony.

Classic finishes, ubiquitous in the apartment, are very carefully proportioned. Graphic cornices under the ceilings decorate all rooms, including the dressing room and bathrooms. Doors and open openings are framed by ordered portals with a strict pattern: the “pilasters” rest on small ledges of the bases, and the profiles of the architraves are drawn with restraint, with thin lines. The layouts of moldings under the boiserie in the living room make up strict rhythmic groups: three vertically elongated “panels” in the recreation area, two on the opposite wall, and one next to the kitchen modules; their uniform solemn rhythm is emphasized by three identically designed black-and-white photographs behind the sofa. In the bedrooms, the “panel” pattern is different: the lower and upper rectangles are separated by narrow, horizontally elongated inserts; the dominance of horizontal lines gives the interior a calm, soothing intonation.

Repair

The Finnish developer company took care of the high-quality execution of technical work, so it was not necessary to change the screed. In the hallway, kitchen, and bathrooms, the floors were tiled, under which heating was installed. New partitions were made of foam blocks, walls and ceilings were plastered, and the latter was partially sewn up with plasterboard for electrical wiring. They did not change the windows, only installed wooden painted window sills, and under them – new radiators. On the balcony, only the floor tiles were replaced.

Design

The range in which the interiors are decorated is reminiscent of the colors of the St. Petersburg white night: in the studio, light gray walls, muted gray-brown upholstery of the sofa, pillows, and curtains create a calming background, structured by the rhythm of molding layouts (they imitate boiserie), strict lines of cornices, furniture outlines.

The fence and cold glazing on the balcony are made by the developer. For summer holidays and tea parties, we purchased furniture made of high-quality plastic, Italian flower pots Dei Castelli. When selecting decor items, we proceeded from the fact that every detail was original, and together they made up an ensemble. For example, kitchen furniture made of MDF, lined with very thick veneer (textured and painted), looks quite modern, at the same time, its facades with very strict panels are associated with a classic interior. Porcelain stoneware, with which the kitchen backsplash is lined, is similar in texture to natural slate. The frame of the dining table is made of natural wood, and the top with a special coating unfolds, almost doubling in size (from 114 to 204 cm). The light gray wool carpet for the living area is made to order.
