Arranging furniture in the living room correctly: 8 steps to the goal

The standard living room includes a sofa, TV stand, and table. At night it can serve as a bedroom. During the day it is used as a library, dressing room, or study. The functionality of the room is extensive, and a competent approach is required. We have selected for you some tips on arranging furniture specifically for this type of living room.

1. Prepare a plan

To begin with, it is advisable to draw a plan of the room from the top point on a scale of approximately 1:20. It should demonstrate the location of windows and doors + the principle of their opening. In addition, you should draw markings for batteries, sockets, outlets for lamps, projections of load-bearing walls, and beams on the ceiling.

2. Interior scenarios

All furniture in a room is always organized around the main item. So, if you are planning to gather with family or friends in the living room, then a soft group should be installed in the center. And if the living room becomes a place to sleep, then first of all you need to set up a sofa bed. Is it planned to have lunch and dinner in the living room? Then the dining group is taken as a basis.

The most functional room can be called the one in which there is a large sofa with a table for decorations and flowers. In this case, it’s definitely not worth overloading the room with furniture.

3. Space distribution

Next, you need to arrange squares and rectangles according to the grid plan. It is important to take into account the opening depth of drawers and cabinets.

There must be space for passage between objects. So, the distance from furniture with hinged doors should be equal to the door width + 60 cm.

4. Laws of composition

In small rooms, it is necessary to observe the rule of proportionality. That is why it is better to choose compact furniture. It is better to place large chairs and huge cabinets away from windows and doors.

In addition, it is advisable to place objects asymmetrically – this creates an unusual pattern. But if you want to add a classic touch to the interior of a small room, you can use high shelving and console cabinets. Upholstered furniture should be located opposite each other.

5. Adding air

The living room should not be overloaded with overly functional furniture. It is better to move the wardrobe closer to the entrance and organize storage inside it without additional modular structures.

It is advisable to leave one wall empty or half-covered with furniture. The more air there is in the living room, the more comfortable it will be to be in it.

6. Alternative storage

Instead of tall cabinets, you can install shelving in the living room  – they perfectly zone the room. For example, in this way, the common area will be separated from the working area. If the sofa folds out, then the shelves framed by it will act as bedside tables.

It is also advisable to place them in a horizontal position along an empty wall, with books placed inside and decor at the end.

7. Additional functional areas

The space for caring for clothes should be located near the built-in wardrobe, partitioning off the dressing room and installing an ironing board with a mirror.

The sofa should be placed at a distance from the wall, and behind it, there should be cargo racks extending in both directions.

If the living room needs to be equipped for work, then it is advisable to purchase a corner computer desk. And in this case, near the window, you can organize a window sill using a tabletop. The coffee area is formed in the same way – a tabletop window sill and high stools a la bar.

It is better to find chairs with openwork and thin legs, and poufs – hollow inside, with lidded seats for storing accessories or clothes.

8. Experiment with styles

In the living room, you can do without not only modular furniture but also upholstered furniture. Instead of a sofa, a Japanese futon or a row of poufs will do.

A high armchair in the Baroque style will complement the Scandinavian decor, and a wicker laundry basket or suitcase will serve as a coffee table.

Styles such as vintage and high-tech can be mixed with loft, etc. Turn on your imagination and don’t be afraid to bring lightness and creativity into the atmosphere.
