Making a bedroom in Scandinavian style: the most complete guide

Not a trend, but a classic — we tell you how to decorate a bedroom in a Scandinavian style, and show beautiful photos for inspiration.

The ideal bedroom design is practical, cozy, and calm. It helps to relax and also sets the tone for a new day. And the Scandinavians know a lot about this – it’s not for nothing that their style has become so popular that it has survived a short century of trends and is rightfully considered a new classic. In this article, we tell you how to decorate a bedroom in a Scandinavian style and share photos of beautiful rooms.

Scandi features

The main associations with Scandi: are IKEA, white color, and budget renovation. Partly true, but this style is not limited to them. We highlight the main features of this direction.

Simplicity

Important: just does not mean boring or poor. The main idea is no tightness and clutter, each thing has its place and its role. A Scandinavian-style bedroom in a house or apartment does not have to be exaggeratedly minimalistic, but every little thing must be thought out, including decor or textiles.

Concise forms and simple color schemes are welcome. Inspiration can be drawn from nature: this applies to materials, prints, and palettes. The environment should be pleasing to the eye, calm, and relaxing, and without unnecessary distractions.

Lots of light

The Scandinavian climatic zone has one important common denominator – the lack of sunlight. The interior should solve exactly this problem, especially in the bedroom, so that in the morning you want to wake up and have the strength to start a new business. How to achieve this?

  • Light colors – white, beige, light gray, and other similar shades visually increase the space.
  • A large window and door openings. If this is not possible, then do not cover the windows with heavy dark curtains, but give preference to natural fabrics of medium density.
  • If you need to highlight several functional areas inside the room (especially if the bedroom is combined with the living room), abandon blank partitions in favor of light-transmitting structures. Suitable rails, racks, and glass screens.

Focus on comfort

Practicality, coziness, comfort – for the Scandinavians, these concepts are combined, complementing each other and promoting the hygge philosophy to the masses. Therefore, when designing a recreation area, first of all, you need to focus not on a formal set of rules, but on your own preferences. After all, the concept of comfort is different for everyone.

Perhaps you want to wake up surrounded by a dazzling white finish that some will feel like a hospital. Or do you find a cozy Scandinavian-style bedroom with black walls? Someone like open storage, and someone is not ready to constantly wipe the dust on the shelves. Stick to the basic canons in the design of the sleeping area, but you can and should adapt them for yourself.

Care for nature

For several years now, concern for the environment has been a common thread in most design decisions, and the philosophy of conscious consumption fits perfectly into the concept of scandi style.

The commitment to sustainability comes in many different forms: natural materials,  conscious consumption, recycled products, non-battery lighting, etc.

Design Ideas

Now let’s take a step-by-step look at how to decorate the interior.

Scandinavian-style bedroom colors

The palette is dominated by light shades, and there are several reasons for this.

  • They visually increase the area of the room, and add air to the space.
  • This is a versatile background that goes well with any color and perfectly complements the texture of wood.
  • Warm tones (beige, pearl, ivory, milky, peach) compensate for the lack of sun.
  • White does not distort the perception of other colors; against its background, they are fully revealed.

From the last point, it follows that bright accents are not prohibited. The main condition is to use deep, preferably natural tones. No acidity or synthetics. Ideal candidates for the role of a complementary color: all berry shades, brown, blue, dark green, and mint, peach, ocher, or terracotta. At the same time, the interior can also be monochrome  – in this case, the achromatic range is compensated by a variety of textures.

Materials

Scandinavian-style bedroom design involves the use of natural materials. If the repair is budgetary, some can be replaced with analogs, but it is important that they are environmentally friendly. From natural materials, use wood to the maximum in any manifestation; natural fabrics (linen, cotton, wool, etc.); burnt clay; rattan, jute, and straw.

They can be supplemented with aluminum and glass, natural wood can be partially replaced by MDF or chipboard. But it is better to refuse plastic products.

Finishing

The Scandinavian style in the interior of the bedroom is manifested in a laconic finish, the emphasis is on the durability and practicality of materials. The easiest way is with flooring: parquet or wooden boards are the priority. They can be contrasting dark or bleached. The ceiling is plain white. If the other finish is also white, it is better to make it 1-2 tones lighter.

Walls give more room for creativity. They can be decorated with light or dark paint; decorative plaster; wooden panels; imitation brickwork; or eco wallpaper. For the entire perimeter, plain or with a non-contrasting pattern is suitable. If one accent wall is decorated with wallpaper (most often behind the headboard), you can use a more active ornament: abstract, geometric, or natural.

Furniture

There should be little furniture, only the most necessary. Universal set – bed, wardrobe or chest of drawers, bedside tables. If the area allows, you can organize a small seating area in the room, for example, an armchair or pouffes by the window. Alternatively, a small dressing table or workplace.

All furniture should be concise, simple in form, and functional. For Scandinavians, the problem of square meters is also relevant, so pay attention to the possibility of additional storage. For example, it can be boxes for linen under the bed, a ladder rack, a storage system under the windowsill, etc.

Decor

The amount of decor depends on personal preferences: you can minimize it or decorate the room with many little things dear to your heart. The main thing is that every detail is added to the environment consciously.

Scandinavians use any items as decorations – for example, even a linen robe or home dress can become part of the decor, but also standard options.

  • Posters and paintings – in simple frames or without them at all.
  • Aroma candles.
  • Natural elements – stones, branches.
  • Decorative ceramics.
  • Living indoor plants.
  • Dried flowers in a vase.
  • Mirror in a vintage or simple wooden frame;
  • Wicker compositions.

Textile

Particular attention is paid to textiles – it makes the room truly cozy. Preference is given to natural fabrics, but high-quality combined ones can also be used. Bed linen can be either a neutral solid color or that bright accent that sets the mood – and it’s also the fastest way to change the atmosphere without resorting to repairs or rearrangement.

The set does not have to be perfectly ironed: natural fabrics wrinkle easily, and natural folds combined with rough textures give the setting its own special charm. A throw and decorative pillows can also be thrown over the bed in a slightly casual way.

Curtains are better to be simple ones. Suitable standard curtains without drapery, Roman, roll, and blinds. If the windows face south, window textiles can be supplemented with blackouts.

Lighting

White walls alone cannot compensate for the lack of sunlight, so special attention is paid to artificial lighting. It matters that it is worth discarding asceticism and organizing sufficient, and most importantly, multi-level illumination, as in the photo below.

So, the bedroom should have several light scenarios.

  • The main one is a fairly bright ceiling lamp in a concise shade; you can use a wooden, wicker, or fabric lampshade.
  • Additional – a lamp or floor lamp to illuminate a specific area.
  • Local – a table lamp, backlight, or wall sconces with a softer and more diffused light.

And garlands, decorative candle lanterns or other decorative lighting will help create an intimate and at the same time cozy mood in the bedroom.
