16 stylish interiors with moldings on the walls

Do you want to transform your living space without excessive costs and in a short time? Or maybe you are looking for a spectacular way to decorate your walls? We offer you to take a closer look at the moldings: these small interior elements can change a lot.

What are moldings and why use them

Molding is a neat decorative detail, which is an overhead convex plank. They use moldings for decoration, and a wide variety of surfaces (not only walls, but also ceilings, arches, doors, etc.).

What is it for? Most often, moldings help to make the situation a little neater, stricter, and more defined, to give it an unobtrusive touch of classics.

In addition, moldings can help in visually adjusting the proportions of the room. If you place them on the wall in the form of vertically elongated rectangles, you can visually raise the ceiling.

And if you divide the walls with moldings, horizontally located along the perimeter of the room, into two or more parts, the ceiling, on the contrary, will visually drop slightly.

The same goal can be achieved by opting for horizontally elongated rectangles on the walls.

You can also use moldings as frames to frame wall decor.

This technique will also help out in the matter of space zoning, clearly denoting one or another functional part of the room.

Types of moldings

Wall decor moldings can be made from a variety of materials. The most common options are polyurethane, gypsum, wood, and MDF.

The polyurethane option is the most affordable, but it requires high-quality staining (otherwise, such a decor may look cheap), is not environmentally friendly, and cannot withstand even a very slight physical impact. Gypsum is a natural, natural material that requires a careful attitude and certain skills in work, a worthy and high-quality option. Wooden moldings are used less often, the reason is the high cost of natural material and the high cost of high-quality wood carving (if you need carved decor). MDF is a cheaper replacement for wood, but in this case, we are not talking about carved decor or environmental friendliness.

A touch of classic

Moldings are often used to give the interior more classic touches. If you are decorating in a classic or neoclassical style, they will come in handy.

This does not mean at all that the use of such a decorative element is limited only to the classical mood. Moldings can organically fit into modern laconic interiors, eclectic furnishings, and Scandinavian style.

Graphic decor

Moldings can also act as an unexpected graphic decorative element for wall decoration. Just look at these amazing examples! Isn’t it far from the classics?

Moldings in the nursery

Think moldings are too boring to use in kid’s room decor? Take a look at this example:

Designers used moldings painted in bright colors for unusual wall decoration – it turned out fresh and original.

To highlight or not to highlight

Decorating the walls with moldings, you decide for yourself an important point: whether to highlight them with color or paint them to match the walls. This is largely a matter of personal preference, but there is also a practical side to the issue. So, if the moldings in your interior, in addition to being decorative, have the function of visually adjusting the proportions of the room, it would be logical to highlight them with color to enhance the effect.

It is also worth painting the moldings in a color different from the wall if they serve to distinguish between two different finishes (relevant for situations where, for example, the lower part of the wall is pasted over with one wallpaper, and the upper one with another).

If dwelling on this decorative technique, you just want to make the atmosphere more interesting and give it a classic touch, you can safely paint the moldings in the color of the walls.

Moldings and wallpapers

In combination with wallpaper, moldings can become a very striking element of wall decor. Look what a stylish panel turned out in this children’s room! But to create it, they just used different types of wallpaper and, in fact, moldings.
