14 Beautiful DIY Wall Decor Ideas

We tell you from which materials to make wall decor, and what improvised materials to hang on the wall to decorate the room.

DIY wall decor will brighten up any room, and creating them it is not as difficult as it seems. The main thing is to come up with an idea or choose from those that already exist. At the same time, hand-made jewelry will look no worse than purchased ones. We invite you to try one of our ideas.

1. Paper wall decor

Old newspapers, colored, corrugated, foil, tissue paper, bright pages from magazines, cardboard, napkins, and old postcards are suitable for wall decorations. White sheets are also suitable, but they will most likely need to be painted or used on a dark background. So they will look more interesting.

Garland

Light, weightless, garlands rustling in the wind will add airiness to the interior. If you have a small room – choose this option. Such decor on the walls will turn out only from thin paper.

You will need time, love for monotonous work, scissors, glue or stapler, pencil, cord, twine, or fishing line. A branch, a perch, and a template may come in handy. This wall decor is good because it can be used as a zoning element. True, the garland for this will have to be made larger.

Dense material is more reliable, but it is more difficult to work with it. Garlands from it look more bulky, you need to think about fastening.

Volumetric figures

Here you already have to look for or draw stencils for complex shapes. They are attached to a fishing line, thread or double-sided tape, and carnation pins directly to the wall. Choose a place as free as possible from other objects. To make the panel look more voluminous, cut out parts of different sizes. You can focus on some detail, zone the room and even slightly correct the visual perception of the room.

Choose the color to match the shade of wallpaper or textiles. Contrasting figures or even different shades and patterns look good on a plain coating. For colorful options, it is better to choose something solid, but slightly darker or richer than wallpaper.

Jewelry made of fabric and threads

Almost every person at home has unused shreds or old clothes. All of these can be used for decoration.

String art

The method of making figures from threads is called string art. It appeared in America and gained great popularity around the world. The product looks unusual, it is quite easy to make it. You will need a piece of board, nails, colored threads, a pencil, a ruler, and a hammer. Paint is optional. Instead of a board, you can take any dense material so that nails are securely held in it.

Sequencing:

  1. A drawing is applied to the board or a template is applied.
  2. Nails are hammered along the contour or carnations are driven into the same depth.
  3. Then use strings to create art.

Luminescent threads are often used, but ordinary threads are suitable: for yarn and embroidery. The best option is thin threads. The product of them looks more elegant. If you don’t feel like driving nails into the wall, use a varnished wooden board as a base. Then, instead of nails, you can use pins or buttons and change pictures depending on your mood.

Macramé panel

Another way to decorate a wall with threads, this time linen, woolen, or silk, is to weave macrame panels. This technique is popular mainly because of its simplicity, which makes it accessible even for beginners. After choosing a scheme, you just have to choose the material, as well as the color of the execution.

Fabric flags

To create such a flag, you will need fabric, matching strings, and a wooden lath for the base. First, the base is cut out (with a margin for bending). The edges are processed with a seam with a hem and a closed cut. On the one hand, there is a margin to thread the rail. When everything is ready, start creating the inscription. It can be embroidered by hand or stitched on a typewriter. There are also fabric markers or paints that can be used to write words.

Fabric paintings

If you have sewing skills, you can make wall hangings from scraps. They add coziness to the interior but are not suitable for every apartment. If the decor is in a strict classic, minimalist, art deco, or modern style, the wall decoration will look strange. In other cases, you can safely experiment.

A simplified version is a fabric stretched over a board, frame, foam, or shoe box lid. In general, any item can be upholstered with a cloth. You can pick up several different, but combined materials, and create a kind of gallery or modular composition. It is desirable that the panels echo the color of the tablecloth, curtains, upholstery, or carpet.

Sequencing:

  1. Cut the fabric.
  2. Stretch the fabric as much as possible on the base, and secure it with a stapler.
  3. You can use glue to fix it, but working with it is more difficult, you need to be careful. Replacing the fabric will be difficult.

If the resulting decor seems boring, decorate it with lace, beads, and buttons. The main thing is not to overdo it with additional details. Sometimes a plain canvas is preferable. Especially if the interior is originally colorful.

Mirror decoration

Decorative mirrors are a multifunctional element of the decor. They will decorate an empty wall,  visually expand the boundaries of the room, and also increase the sunlight. But you can also transform them with your own hands.

Decoupage frame

If there is already a wooden frame, it can be updated using the decoupage technique. To do this, you will need thin napkins with a beautiful pattern, scissors, decoupage glue or PVA, finishing varnish, sandpaper, a flat brush, and water-based paint.
The surface must be leveled, primed, and allowed to dry. Then a napkin is applied to it, cover it with a thick layer of glue on top. PVA must first be diluted with water in a ratio of 2: 1. The paper can easily tear during the process, be careful. When the mirror is dry, cover it with two coats of varnish

Frame from improvised materials

Decor option for a small, round mirror made of plastic spoons. You will need wire cutters, acrylic or spray paint, a brush or sponge, a glue gun or glue moment, and a chipboard.

  1. Cut a circle out of plywood to fit the frame.
  2. Break off the cups of all spoons.
  3. Glue the first circle along the outer contour. Leave a distance of one spoon between the parts.
  4. Attach the second circle in the spaces left.
  5. Cover the product with paint, and glue a mirror in the center.

In addition to these methods, the frame can be made from shells, beads, small branches, hemp rope, a long belt, and knitting strings.

Photos and paintings

A gallery of memorabilia or paintings is another easy way to decorate a wall.

How to fix a painting without a frame

  1. Garland. You can hang them on clothespins on luminous, paper, fabric garlands, or on a clothesline.
  2. Hanger. For such an unusual placement, you will need small clothespins or laces, and ribbons. If you don’t want to ruin your photo by making a hole in it, use double-sided tape.
  3. Corkboard. Use stationery cloves or pins.
  4. Branch. It must first be treated with an antiseptic, and then painted.

To beautifully place pictures, do not alternate b / w and color photos. It is better if they are in the same color scheme. Also, do not fix them at eye level. Those that are larger – attach a little higher.

Decor from corks and boards

If you have unnecessary boxes or boards at home, you can make convenient shelves for spices, books, and flowers from them. Boxes or boards are cleaned with sandpaper, painted, and hung upside down against the wall.

With your own hands, you can make a corkboard for notes. To do this, you will need a lot of wine corks, a knife, PVA, and a candy box. Trim the corks so that they are the same length. Make a hole in the box for fastening, thread the tape into it, and fix it. Thickly smear the bottom of the PVA box. Glue the corks one by one. To make the decor even more interesting, paint all or part of the corks with paint.

Decorative plates

You can brightly decorate the room with decorative plates. They are often brought back from travels or found interesting specimens at flea markets.

You can paint a plate with your own hands – a great opportunity to let your imagination run wild. Even those who have never painted dishes will be able to cope with this task. This technique is easy to master and does not require the use of expensive materials.

For beginners, dot painting or painting using a stencil is suitable.

With dot painting, the contours are created with small dots, so it is convenient to draw in the style of a mandala, creating interesting patterns. Instead of paints, you can use special markers for drawing on ceramics. To create a pattern using a stencil, a template is first cut out of paper and fixed on a plate with tape. After the pattern is painted and dried, the stencil is carefully removed and the background is drawn.

Hooks

Ordinary round wooden hooks, made in different colors and sizes, can be an interesting decoration. Depending on the planned loads, they can be fixed with glue or with nails and self-tapping screws.

Painting

Before you start painting, you need to prepare a stencil. This will be especially useful for those who are not an artist because it will be quite difficult to correct what has been drawn.
You can use masking tape for the stencil. It is suitable if the drawing is planned to be simple, or you just want to paint the wall in several colors. For more complex patterns and drawings, a stencil on adhesive paper is used. After drawing the picture and drying the paint, a matte varnish is applied. It allows you to permanently save the image.

Stickers

If you want to apply an original, but temporary drawing, use special stickers. Stickers can be glued to paint and wallpaper, they stick well and can be easily removed. Some manufacturers, in addition to ready-made drawings, offer to create a sticker with the image of the customer.

Carefully smooth out the protective film before applying the sticker. Then lay the sticker on a flat surface and gently peel off the backing. Take the sticker by the edges and stick it on the selected section of the wall, smooth out any bumps. The last step is to remove the protective film. Both films are removed in a smooth motion, starting from one edge.

Metal shapes

Geometrically stylized figures or silhouette images made of metal are a stylish trend that will freshen up the environment. Such a metal decor can be painted in any color and looks great both on its own and as part of a composition.

Cameroon hats

Favored by many designers, Cameroonian Ju-Ju hats do not lose ground: they are still in trend. You can place them yourself, combine several models of different colors and sizes, or make the hat part of a decorative composition.

Empty frames

Beautiful wide frames do not have to frame anything at all, they look great on their own. Suitable for decorating a neoclassical or minimalist interior.

Mosaic panel

Note to lovers of simple and not-too-expensive decor: mosaic panels are a concise and rather unhackneyed way to transform an empty wall.
