How to choose a sofa for the kitchen: 6 important points to consider and useful tips

All the intricacies of choosing a sofa for the kitchen: how to choose the size the right materials the design and decide on other important parameters.

Choosing a sofa for the kitchen is different from choosing the same furniture for the living room. There are common nuances: size, and mechanism, but you should pay special attention to the height and material of the upholstery. We tell the details and recommend how to properly place the sofa.

How to choose

1. Foldable or not

If the sofa becomes part of the dining group, a non-folding, rather rigid model will do. It will be comfortable to sit on. In small apartments, you often need a sofa in the kitchen with a bed for guests because this is the only place where they can be placed. In this case, folding models are chosen. Practical layout mechanisms are French, Dolphin, and click-clack. A folding sofa should be of medium hardness for comfortable sleep and sitting.

2. Height

Before choosing a sofa for the kitchen, be guided by the height of the chairs of the dining group. Why this is important? It is easy to see when you remember how inconvenient it really is to have family dinners in the living room. If you put a kitchen chair next to a soft group, the seats will be at different levels. Chairs are always higher. But the depth of their seats, as a rule, is less.

Now to the numbers. The average distance from the floor to the top of the dining table is 72-78 cm. In this case, from the floor to the seat should be 40-45 cm. Then you can put your legs at a right angle and reach the table with your elbows.

If the seat is soft, it will sag under the person’s weight. When buying such a model, subtract 5-7 cm from its height in order to have a “margin”.

3. Size

In order for the furniture composition to look harmonious, the sofa must match the rest of the large objects in the kitchen. Choose it according to the width of the dining table, there should not be a protrusion more than 15-20 cm beyond the edges. Also, consider the scale of the kitchen set. If cabinets occupy most of the room, it is better to take smaller upholstered furniture so as not to overload the space visually. An important role is played by the area of the room and its geometry. In an elongated space, furniture should be long. In a small one – miniature, for two seats.

4. Upholstery and filler

The upholstery material must be wear-resistant and not absorb moisture and odors. Suitable eco-leather, flock (durable synthetic material resembling suede), chenille, and jacquard. If you prefer natural materials, pick up a removable cover made of thick cotton. Then it will be easy to wash it in the washing machine.

Many manufacturers offer special upholstery with an anti-stain coating: it is resistant to dirt and abrasion and is also suitable for people with allergies. It is important to pay attention to the filler. It shouldn’t be too hard or too soft. Suitable polyurethane foam. It is inexpensive, sufficiently resilient, elastic, and environmentally friendly. Natural latex filler is more expensive but will last for many years. It has high elasticity, quickly restores its shape, and is hypoallergenic. But it is better to refuse the synthetic – it is crushed, and dents appear, which are difficult to get rid of.

5. Style and shape

Upholstered furniture of ascetic and strict forms will fit into the interior of a modern trend: Scandinavian, minimalism, eco-style, even a loft. A model with curved legs and elegant armrests is suitable for a classic-style kitchen. But since the kitchen is, after all, a tough environment, furniture should be easy to care for. Lots of notches and curved shapes make cleaning difficult.

A model with armrests is best suited for an oval or round table. So it is more convenient to sit down without hitting the corners and the armrest.

The choice of a corner kitchen sofa or a straight one depends on the area of the room. Most often, a straight model is chosen, it is easier to fit it into space, to make it a zoning element.

6. Color

If saturated colors are used in the interior, choose upholstery in light neutral tones or in a shade close to the walls and kitchen unit. Such upholstery will not be an independent accent. In a neutral light room, on the contrary, you can make upholstered furniture an accent. For example, any bright and saturated color will look interesting in a white interior. In a gray space, an orange or yellow fabric will add warmth.

Tips for Choosing a Sofa for a Small Kitchen

  • Choose a model without a back. It will not overload the interior and will look more organic. Some manufacturers can order modular solutions that look like a continuation of a kitchen set.
  • Look for manufacturers for very small sofas in the kitchen such as “kitchen corners”. They do not fold out, but they can fit even into the smallest room. Another important plus is that they are specifically designed for the dining group, so manufacturers immediately produce kitchen corners of the right height.
  • If you want to increase the amount of storage, you should choose models with a drawer under the seat.

What is the best way to put a sofa in the kitchen?

How to place a sofa in the kitchen depends on its purpose. If the dining table functions as a worker, place upholstered furniture with its back to the window. Then more sunlight will fall on the table. But here it is important to take into account the nuance of the radiator. Upholstery can crack from overheating, and warm air will not circulate properly around the room. You need to leave a gap. If the area of the room does not allow this, you can choose a narrow, elongated radiator. It is placed vertically on the side of the window.

For a folding model, it is important to provide a margin of space. And do not put it close to the battery, so that dry and too-warm air does not interfere with sleep.

In the kitchen-living room, you can put upholstered furniture on the border of two zones, with the back to the kitchen set. Then it will visually zone the space.
