Mark Newson showcase suitcases

Marc Newson reimagined the iconic Maison travel suitcase for Louis Vuitton. In his Milanese installation Cabinet of Curiosities, he presented a set of shelving units shaped like luggage. In doing so, he gave one of the most recognizable suitcases in the world elements of modularity in his rounded style and added colors.

For the designer, this project is an elegant way to add more intrigue and emotion to his long-term collaboration with the brand. The suitcase has been turned into a display case. Inside the monogrammed rigid case, Newson placed 19 leather-covered cubes. These modules come in three sizes, some with hidden compartments for valuables. They are intended for the exposition of small items: books, souvenirs, and works of art. Removable cubes can be rearranged – more than 1000 configurations are provided in total. Personalization is another important game moment of this story: the drawers are made in three colors, this is VVN genuine leather; bright yellow; as well as bright red, green, and blue.

“Quality, performance, compromise craftsmanship. It’s a simple idea, a utilitarian and iconic object that gives the owner the freedom to do whatever they want with it. Each compartment is a container that lives on its own. This is a cabinet of curiosities, a repository of memories. It can become anything – only you, as a collector, endow it with meaning and symbolism. And even if you’re not a collector, do whatever you want with it,” says Newson.

The designer tried to keep the iconography of the object but wanted to change the context in which it is applied. This is not about the journey, but about the items displayed in the luggage, which once traveled a long way and mean a lot to you. The appearance was predetermined by the genre itself, but in the work on the interior, complete creative freedom was provided. The new cabinet is the first Louis Vuitton project designed to open 180 degrees.
