Birdwatching house designed by zU-studio

Amsterdam-based architecture firm zU-studio has designed a seaside private residence in Costa Rica from where you can watch the region’s many birds. To emphasize the unusual purpose of the house, its shape is designed in the form of an abstract bird with outstretched wings.

The house is located on top of a hill, which offers a spectacular view of Santa Teresa Beach. There are more than 80 species of birds in Costa Rica, and the configuration of the sections of the house is reminiscent of the moment they take off and the graceful movement of the wings. The building, which was named N2, is a simple original structure that is in harmony with the environment. It takes a systematic approach based on elegance and simplicity both inside and out.

The sculpted roof, reminiscent of bird plumage, is built using a lightweight frame. It forms a sequence of platforms at different heights. These plateaus allow natural light to filter through the gaps. Some of the platforms expand into terraces and become spaces for exploration. The architects took care of the all-round panoramic view and also provided the house with cross-ventilation.

The rounded shape of the structure made it possible to maximize the space facing the ocean. The height of the house reaches seven meters at the central point, gradually decreasing on the sides to blend seamlessly into the natural landscape. The central courtyard, decorated with colorful flowers, serves as a welcoming meeting place. Interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces is an integral feature of this three-storey building.

On the ground floor, common areas were arranged: a combined living area, a kitchen, and a courtyard. The atelier at the back of the structure makes this part of the house more versatile. Three separate bedrooms offer stunning sea views, and from the open semi-circular terrace with a swimming pool you have access to various areas on the ground floor. The apartments above serve as master bedrooms – these suites also have spacious terraces.
