Liliya Kaisarova: a house in Bashkortostan, inspired by the Ural Mountains

Architect Liliya Kaisarova, studio SloyArch, designed a house in Bashkortostan with an area of 260 square meters for a young energetic couple. The main feature of the house is the “rock” in the living room made of architectural concrete. The inspiration for the interior was the nature of Bashkiria, embodied in wood and stone, cozy soft shapes, and bright accents. The main wishes of the customers are to provide enough space for family meetings and to allow more natural light and air into the space.

The color palette was based on woody and rocky shades, which abound in the rocks of the Urals and diluted these colors with black metal and azure gray in textiles. To preserve air and lightness, white with black accents were used to decorate the kitchen, living room, and entrance area. The high window near the stairs to the second floor is located on the west side. The sun’s rays shine through it in the evening, so the designer proposed placing a stone relief made of architectural concrete on the opposite wall.

“The rocks and mountains of Bashkortostan inspired me to create a stone wall made of architectural concrete in the living room, on which the rays of the setting sun miraculously fall and create an incredibly beautiful play of light on summer and autumn evenings. The combination of wood and stone creates an atmosphere of comfort, and the finishing touch is the series of paintings “Stones of the Urals” by the Bashkir artist. Until the last moment, I was very afraid that the implemented texture of the rock would be unsuccessful, but the result turned out to be worthy.”

The house was built about 10 years ago, but by the time the interior was designed there was a bare concrete box inside, there was no staircase, and the roof was leaking. The new construction team eliminated all the shortcomings, installed communications, and installed water heating on the terrace. The roof and facades of the house were redone, and landscape design was implemented.

The house has all the necessary technical premises on the -1st floor. On the ground floor, the vestibule was enlarged to accommodate a large wardrobe for seasonal outerwear. From the kitchen, a separate exit leads to the outer courtyard, to the summer terrace with barbecue. Previously, the terrace was located where the kitchen was, but thanks to the move, it became more convenient to serve a table outside during summer parties and there was access to the spa area, the entrance to which is located right there. The kitchen floor is an unusual gradient solution: porcelain stoneware transitions into parquet. Especially for this purpose, the tiles were cut into shapes that repeated the parquet pattern.

On the second floor, there are three rooms. The brightest one was used as a bedroom and made into an office with a private balcony. The remaining rooms became a guest room and a master’s office. In the master bedroom, decorative concrete-like plaster with a velvety texture was used. The master bathroom is decorated with a fresco with natural motifs; the decoration combines marble and wood. For the walls, we chose Spanish tiles made using authentic technology, which creates an unusual uneven surface with tints of play.

Important factors when choosing furniture were ergonomics, functionality, and quality of finish. The built-in and cabinet furniture throughout the house was made according to the architect’s sketches by the Reforma furniture company. The living room has a Boca Room modular sofa. The master bedroom was conceived strictly for sleeping, without unnecessary decor, so an enveloping gray shade was chosen for the interior of the entire room.

When developing the project, it was decided to abandon storage spaces in all living rooms and eliminate cabinets and chests of drawers, collecting all things in one place. This is how a dressing room with an area of 30 square meters appeared near the entrance, divided into men’s and women’s areas by a transparent glass wardrobe with tinted glass.

“There is a make-up area with natural light near the window, and the dressing room lighting combines spotlights, light profiles, and uniform matte lighting for a more comfortable perception of selected clothing combinations. The lighting scenarios were inspired by the experience of boutiques and showrooms,” says the author of the project.

The entire house has a hidden music system with built-in speakers, which allows you to connect a smartphone and listen to background music in all rooms. The volume is adjusted individually for each room. “I am very pleased with the area around the piano, the base of the stairs is designed to accommodate seating for live music. The floor of the pedestal is heated, and it is very convenient to seat guests on it,” says Liliya Kaisarova.
