How to visually raise the ceiling: 7 really working tricks

The ceiling can be made visually higher using simple design moves. We talk about those who cope with the task impeccably.

1. Vertical stripes

A good effect of stretching the space gives an ornament in the form of a vertical strip on the walls. It is better to choose colors that are not very contrasting, and the stripes are wide: so that the eye does not get tired. Then the striped walls will fulfill their mission – the ceiling will become higher.

If you are brave enough, know that the bright color of the stripes will further divert attention from the low height of the ceiling. It “pulls the blanket” and solves the task of moving the ceiling away from the floor. In this case, it is better to select only one wall – so as not to ripple in the eyes.

2. Draperies

Textiles should hang in free folds, preferably over the entire width of the window wall – this way it gives an effect similar to a vertical stripe. Do not waste time on trifles, take a large piece of textile. The main secret is that the curtains must touch the floor, and even better – lie on it with a light fold.

3. Glare floor

You can divert attention from the ceiling with the help of highlights on the floor: the shine of the lacquer coating on the wooden floor will add depth to the interior. For these purposes, wood species without a clear pattern are better suited. Even better if the floor is dark. With white walls and ceilings, dark wood is sure to grab attention.

4. Directional lighting

Organize the lighting so that the light is directed not from the ceiling, but to the ceiling: local sconces or floor lamps will help you solve this problem. This technique will create not only the feeling of a “floating” ceiling but also a cozy and comfortable diffused light.

The second option is a solid, but delicate illumination around the perimeter of the ceiling, hidden behind the cornice and directed upwards. But a vertically hanging chandelier, as a rule, takes away the volume from a small room.

5. Vertical paintings

Large, vertically oriented paintings, photos, or posters will add height to the space. Small options are also suitable if placed on shelves under the ceiling or vertically in a row. In this case, it is better to hang shelves one above the other or a ladder. The main inconvenience here is to wipe the dust at the very top.

6. Wide plinth

This decorative element of the interior has never let anyone down. If you don’t know what color to choose for a plinth, choose white, you can’t go wrong. At the same time, it will add style to the room and ceiling height. This technique works equally well with both dark and light wallpapers.

7. Dark color

The largest number of misconceptions exist about the dark ceiling. It is believed that it creates a depressing mood, attracts excessive attention, and visually lowers the height. In fact, using a dark color, you achieve the opposite result – the ceiling in the room dissolves. This is because the light falling on it is absorbed, and the borders are no longer readable, which adds a sense of volume and air.
