6 important recommendations for those who organize a pantry in the apartment

If you decide that you cannot do without a pantry in the house, you should approach this issue carefully: choose the right place, and content, think about lighting and other points that we will discuss in the article.

1. Organize a place

Perhaps the pantry was originally provided in your apartment. In this case, it remains only to properly organize the space inside. And if there is no such room, it can be equipped independently.

  • Use a niche in the kitchen, in the hallway, or in the living room. You can leave this space open, put sliding doors, or hang a curtain on the ledge, depending on the area and the location of the niche.
  • Erect plasterboard partitions and separate parts of a room for a pantry.
  • Put a deep tall cabinet.

At the same time, there are no clear requirements for the size of the pantry. For example, for storing canned food or cleaning products, you will have enough space with a depth of 15-20 cm.

2. Choose a destination

Decide for which zone you want to increase the storage area. It could be the kitchen, especially if you store a lot of utensils and canned food. Or a small bathroom where you want to remove cleaning products, a mop, and a vacuum cleaner. Perhaps you have a lot of sports equipment and it spoils the interior of your bedroom or living room. Someone does not have enough space to store clothes and shoes, and there is no place for a full-fledged dressing room. Or maybe you don’t have a garage and need to store tools and parts somewhere .

3. Consider filling and logistics

The previous step was important because depending on what you will store, you need to select the filling of the pantry.

For example, for a kitchen pantry, the filling may be like this.

  • The bottom row of sliding wooden boxes on wheels for storing vegetables.
  • Rack with shelves 30 cm wide. The distance between the lower shelves is 35-40 cm for storing large jars and bottles. The distance between the upper shelves is 15-20 cm for storing small jars and packages.

If you need to store tools and car parts, it makes sense to leave part of the pantry empty so that you can store large items. And hang a perforated board with various fasteners on one of the walls, which can be removed and re-hung if necessary.

Those who want to put away sports equipment in the pantry should pay attention to wall hooks on which you can hang a bicycle, scooter or skateboard. Dumbbell bars and a yoga mat can also come in handy.

4. Choose your storage accessories

There are a lot of different devices that are used in different rooms but also work well for a pantry. For example, drawers for a bed can be placed under a shelving unit. So you do not lose usable space and can pull out the drawer with one movement. Hooks that are commonly used in the hallway can be glued to the inside of the pantry door.

Glass containers and jars for the kitchen, shelves with hooks, transparent boxes, and wicker baskets are also suitable .

5. Add Lighting

You should start with a pair of spot ceiling lights. But they probably won’t be enough. The upper shelves will block the light. It is worth adding a wall lamp or fixing small light bulbs on clothespins on the shelves. Or use a lamp on a long cord.

6. Take inventory and make a list of items

An embarrassing mistake that can be made is to forget what you are storing. As soon as you start filling the shelves, write a list with what is where, and keep it in a conspicuous place, for example, on the wall. Every time you add or remove something, mark it on the list. It is so easy to keep order, always remember the shelf life of products, and plan purchases.
