How to choose a painting for your interior and find the right place for it: 5 universal tips

Empty walls are one of the main reasons why the interior looks unfinished and boring. And the easiest way to correct this mistake is to hang a picture. We’ll tell you how to choose the right one.

1. How to choose a painting by color

In order for the painting to look harmonious in the interior, make sure that it fits into the color scheme of the room. At the same time, the canvas can be made both in the tones of the room and in contrasting tones, if they are combined with each other.

2. By room size

A large painting in a massive frame will visually make a small room smaller, while small paintings will get lost in a large area. Try cutting out rectangles of paper in different sizes and try them on the wall to get an idea of what kind of painting you should be looking for. An interesting exception to this rule: a large painting placed on the floor and leaning against the wall will make the space of a small room appear larger. Selecting such a painting is often difficult, as is sacrificing the space it will occupy, but it looks very impressive.

There is another little trick: vertical paintings or a vertical composition of several paintings or posters will make the ceiling visually higher. But in apartments with high ceilings, you should be careful with this technique so as not to get the “well effect”. For such rooms, it is better to select horizontally located large canvases.

3. How to combine with the chosen interior style

When buying a painting, keep in mind the style in which your interior is made. Even a very popular pop art painting is unlikely to please a classic interior, and a landscape in a gilded frame will be difficult to fit into the Scandinavian style. Don’t forget about existing accents and accessories so that the interior doesn’t become overloaded.

4. How to choose the right topic

If you can’t figure out what kind of image you want to hang in your home, try a few win-win options:

  • fan art with your favorite scenes from movies and cartoons, book characters;
  • images of places you have visited or dream of visiting;
  • images of nature and animals;
  • motivational quotes and pictures;
  • abstractionism.

When choosing a painting, be guided by your own taste and feelings. Do not rely on trends and advice from strangers, because you look at this picture every day, so it is important that it evokes only pleasant emotions.

5. Where to hang it

To choose the best place for a painting, conduct an experiment: ask several people to say where their eyes first fall when they walk into a room. It is in this place that you should hang the canvas that you like.

If you are not sure that you want to leave the painting in a visible place for a long time and are afraid of ruining the walls, try mounts that do not require drilling anything:

  • bluetack – blue double-sided tape, that can withstand up to 1.5 kg of load and leaves no marks;
  • Command picture mount – transparent mounts that can support up to 2 kg;
  • hanging mounting system “Kreps” can support up to 1.5 kg.

Remember that the larger the canvas, the more free space there should be in front of it. Hang large paintings so that there is a space in front of them equal to twice the height of the canvas.

Don’t forget to take into account the size of the furniture next to which the painting will hang. The length of the canvas should be no more than half the length of the sofa or chest of drawers over which it hangs. For compositions from photographs or posters, this value increases to two-thirds of the length of the furniture.
