How to use marble tiles in the bathroom

Size, color, style – collected everything you need to know about marble tiles in the bathroom interior.

There is such a rule: if you want the interior to look more expensive, add marble. And it is not necessary to buy a natural premium stone – modern imitations are almost indistinguishable in appearance, but cost much less. In this article, we tell and show photo examples of how to create a noble and modern bathroom design with marbled tiles: what style it will fit in, what to combine with, and what can be finished with such ceramics.

Which style to choose

The texture of marble has many undeniable advantages, but it cannot be called absolutely universal. Consider the directions in which this finish will fit exactly.

Classical

The first candidate is the classics and its more democratic neoclassical interpretation. The style itself involves luxury and the use of quality materials such as stone, malachite, granite, etc. Marble in a classic bathroom can be used in any variations and shades. The larger the tile format, the better.

There are no restrictions on colors either – the choice depends on the overall palette of the bathroom. Light tiles are suitable for the traditional white-beige-gold range of a classic interior and black for a spectacular and luxurious design. You can complement the lining with precious metals, crystals, and a large number of mirrors. Solid wood furniture will look good.

The same rules apply to neoclassicism. But if in a classic marbled style, most often they do all the finishing or combine it with another stone, then in a neoclassical bathroom, ceramics plus painted walls with moldings and stucco will be the most popular combination.

Modern

The modern design of the bathroom with marble tiles is also popular. Imitation can be used in different ways.

  • Accent – for example, highlight the wall behind the bath, shower, or area behind the sink.
  • Paired with other tiles or any finishing material in a ratio of approximately 50/50.
  • For the floor and walls – in this case, so as not to look clumsy, choose a low-contrast, almost imperceptible pattern.

The shade and intensity of the pattern are chosen depending on the size of the room. If the bathroom is small, light tiles will visually expand the space. The more contrasting the veins, the more attention they will draw to the finish and therefore the actual size of the bathroom.

In contemporary interiors, you can experiment: for example, combine two different textures of the same stone or choose an imitation of a rare shade: pink, bluish, etc. The only rule is to dilute the active texture with a calm finish and other interior elements.

Minimalism

This style visually often coincides with the contemporary style, since in fact, it is a variation of it. The essence of the philosophy of minimalism is that less is more. This direction does not accept clutter, tightness, open shelves, and an abundance of unnecessary details. It is characterized by restrained, close-to-natural colors; durable natural materials or their high-quality imitations; functionality is at the forefront – everything in the room is needed for some reason; conciseness of forms and simplicity of lines.

Since there is practically no decor in minimalist interiors, it is the decoration that will become the very accent element that will make the design interesting. Textured tiles can be combined with graphic fittings, emphasized by mirrors and lighting, or combined with natural stone, for example, on a countertop.

Art deco

This elegant and cheerful style is strongly associated with America and the Great Gatsby, which means that luxury in this design is appropriate in any manifestation.

Characteristic features of Art Deco: pronounced geometry, many right angles, and clear lines; achromatic colors at the base of the palette; a lot of gold, glass, and metal; contrast and brightness.

In addition to the listed materials, dark wood, stone, and any variations of marble would be appropriate in such a bathroom. The tile imitating it can be of any tonality: achromatic, cold gray, with a beige-golden tonality. You can combine it with paint, decorative plaster, moisture-resistant wallpaper, or other tiles with a geometric or abstract pattern.

Finish options

In the bathroom, tiles can be used on any surface.

Walls

Most often, marbled tiles in the bathroom, as in the photo below, are used to decorate walls. In the bathroom, they are the ones that attract the most attention, so it is important to choose the texture of the right size and contrast.

You can decorate with such tiles on all four walls, several or even only part of the wall, thus focusing on a certain area in the room. This task is best handled by dark or colored models, and a light coating is suitable for the role of a neutral background.

It is important to consider the combination with plumbing. The contrasting combination looks most spectacular: dark on light or vice versa. Black plumbing is well complemented by matching fittings, and in a pair of lights, you can pick up metal accessories.

Floor

Marble flooring is a popular solution that fits into almost any style. You can choose from white, black or dark brown. It is better to lay it on the floor in a large format, in a seamless way.

If the bathroom is small, you can choose products with a glossy surface – it will additionally reflect light and visually make the space larger. The black or color version will look especially impressive.

All Together

Finally, a rather bold option is to lay out both vertical and horizontal surfaces with marble ceramics. Get an elegant mono-finish.

In such a design, it is important to place accents and create dynamics – otherwise, the marble cocoon will be perceived as flat and tire the eye. For example, dilute a single surface with contrasting fittings, other active textures, and accent furniture.

Marble Tile Bathroom Colors

Unlike natural stone, which is limited by its natural properties, imitations of any color can be found on the market. It is worth choosing a color based on the style and size of the room.

Light

Such a stone is produced in a warm and cold shade. The first goes into beige, resulting in a light pearly cream shade. The veins are usually golden brown. It will go well with warm metals and wood texture. Cold variations are mixed with gray, they can be combined with silver, metal, glass, and concrete. Light tiles will visually expand the room, so they are suitable for bathrooms of any size.

Dark

Dark varieties look very impressive and add mystery and depth to the setting. Most often, such ceramics are used to highlight certain areas as an accent, but you can take a black stone as a basis. In this case, it is important that the bathroom is sufficiently lit: use multi-level illumination, LED lighting, and mirror surfaces that will reflect and scatter light. Remember that it is in the bathroom that dark surfaces turn out to be more easily soiled than light ones – so you need to be prepared for regular cleaning.

Color

Multi-colored variations immediately attract attention. Often they are mixed with the texture of other stones: malachite, onyx, and quartz. Almost always, colored surfaces are used as accents, combined with other finishing materials or classic black and white marble.

What to combine

The marble texture is active in itself, so it is important to combine it correctly with other materials.

The best companions for ceramics

  • Wood – its warm texture will balance the cold of the stone and make the interior of the bathroom more comfortable. Light wood will be in harmony with white or pink tiles. Pine, beech, and other species with a golden sheen – with beige, brown, or green. Dark wood – with black, blue, or cold gray. You can also use wood tiles.
  • Concrete and stone. Related textures coexist well together, both are cold and quite brutal. This combination is used in interiors in the style of minimalism, hi-tech, and loft. Porcelain stoneware (well suited for floors), ceramics, or decorative plaster will give a stone texture. If you need to imitate concrete, plaster, or a modern material – micro cement is also suitable.
  • Smooth surface – part of the wall can be painted, trimmed with decorative panels, or pasted over with moisture-resistant wallpaper. A simple smooth coating will visually relieve the space and give the eye a rest. In a classic or neoclassical style, you can add moldings in color or stucco around the upper perimeter to empty walls.
