How to keep warm in your house: 7 Tips

The question of how to keep your home warm is relevant every winter, but this year it is especially acute. Therefore, the specialists of Minimalism decided to share with you practical tips that will make your home warmer and more comfortable in winter. The advantage of the methods we offer is efficiency and simplicity – they do not require complex, time-consuming, and expensive repairs. Read on and find out how to make your home warmer during the cold season!

#1. Insulate the windows

Windows are the biggest source of heat loss in a room. Therefore, to keep the house warm, they must be insulated. You can do this yourself, without even changing the old window structures. To eliminate blowing and heat loss, you can:

  • adjust the fittings to ensure that the sash is pressed tightly around the perimeter of the window (winter mode);
  • apply silicone sealant or putty to the cracks;
  • replace damaged rubber seals with new ones;
  • cover the window sashes around the perimeter with windproof tape, construction tape, or adhesive-based foam insulation;
  • stick a heat-saving film on the glass;
  • hang thick curtains. Wool and linen fabrics protect well from drafts. Blinds and fabric roller shutters are also suitable for thermal insulation.

#2. Lay down carpets

A carpet on the floor is a practical option for anyone who wants to create a cozy atmosphere and keep their home warm. Products that are soft and pleasant to the touch ensure that homeowners do not have to walk on cold floors. The thicker the material, the better the thermal insulation.

Carpets with long pile and a soft fluffy surface are ideal for the bedroom, nursery, and living room. They retain heat well and give your feet a pleasant feeling. But it is better to choose pile-free carpets for high-traffic areas – kitchens, hallways, and corridors. This is explained by the fact that such carpeting is easier to care for.

#3. Decorate your home with knitted items

Knitted products in winter are not only beautiful elements of home decor. Blankets, rugs, and pillows on a bed, sofa, or armchair will give warmth and comfort, making winter evenings especially cozy. In addition, things with textured knitting or classic patterns are a good option for decorating a living room, bedroom, and children’s room. Children will like bright-knitted runners in the shape of animals.

Covers, covers and seats for chairs, stools, armchairs or sofas provide additional warmth, protect the surface of the furniture from wear and tear and simply look impressive. A knitted pouf is not only an interesting decor, but also a comfortable, warm place to sit. And knitted covers for cups will keep your drinks warm longer.

#4. Buy infrared or quartz heaters

To maintain a comfortable temperature and keep your home warm, you cannot do without heaters. We recommend infrared and quartz, and now we’ll tell you why.

The operating principle of infrared devices is as follows: a heating element emits infrared waves that heat hard surfaces and objects. They then release heat into the air, heating it to a comfortable temperature. The principle of operation of a quartz heater is somewhat different: a heating element is built into the monolithic plate. It heats up and increases the temperature of the quartz plate, which heats the space around it. After switching off, it continues to give off heat for several hours.

Despite the differences in operating principles, infrared and quartz heaters have common advantages:

  • save energy;
  • quickly heat the air;
  • do not burn oxygen and do not dry out the air;
  • have a high level of heat transfer;
  • operate silently;
  • do not raise dust.

#5. Close interior doors

To keep your home warm, it is recommended to follow simple rules regarding doors. If certain rooms maintain higher temperatures, it is better to keep the interior doors closed. This way, air from a warm space will not escape into a cooler one. Also, there will be no drafts in the house, and warm air will not be cooled by circulating between rooms.

#6. Don’t cover radiators

The easiest way to keep your home warm and increase the room temperature by 1-3 degrees is to open the radiators. Most often they are covered with tulle and curtains that absorb heat, less often – furniture or decorative panels that retain it. In any case, the radiators should be opened so that the air in the room warms up faster and better.

#7. Additional tips for creating a warm and cozy atmosphere

Properly selected lighting and decor improve your mood and add comfort and warmth, even when a snowstorm is raging outside the windows. Such accessories will fit into any interior:

  • figured and aroma candles give light and warmth, and also calm. Accords of coffee, cinnamon, citrus, pine, spices, and baked goods turn the evening into an aromatherapy session. The main thing is to follow fire safety rules and make sure that candles are out of reach of children;
  • LED lamps (in the shape of the Moon, planets, maps of Ukraine, trees, animals, birds, etc.) and garlands create a magical festive mood. You can choose battery-powered models. Products with a built-in battery, which is charged from the network or USB, work autonomously for a long time;
  • add warm colors to the interior of your home. Textiles and accessories in yellow, red, and orange colors, which are associated with warmth, sun, and fire, tone up, improve mood, evoke positive emotions, warm and increase performance. An excellent option for the cold season, when the weather outside is cloudy;
  • blankets made of fleece, wool and plush fabrics, fur pillows, blankets, and capes provide warmth, create a cozy atmosphere and beautifully complement knitted items.

We hope your winter will be warm and cozy, and your home will be ready for frost. And our tips will help keep your home warm.
