How to choose the right curtains: designer tips

Should curtains touch the floor, which curtains are suitable for a small room, and which ones will make a large one cozy? Let’s look into these and other issues with designer Daria Pikova

Curtains are not just about comfort, but also about practicality. After all, they are the ones who protect the room from sunlight, dust, night lights, circulation of cold (hot) air, and other factors. Therefore, you need to choose curtains responsibly. How? Interior designer Daria Pikova says.

What should you consider when choosing curtains?

  • Curtains with a transverse contrasting print visually expand the room, while a vertical pattern makes it more elongated.
  • If you do not want the curtains to touch the floor, then the distance between their edge and the floor covering should be 5–8 cm, and if on the contrary, their length should exceed the height of the wall by 15–20 cm.
  • Are there small partitions on the sides of the window? You should not cover it with curtains – this will only make the room look heavier.
  • For rooms with low ceilings, choose curtains made from lightweight fabrics in light shades.
  • Long curtains are not suitable for a nursery, kitchen, or office; it is better to choose Roman blinds or, as an option, French curtains.
  • Long light curtains will decorate and adjust the volume of small rooms. Hang dark curtains in a large room – the space will immediately become more intimate and cozy.

How to decide on the color of the curtains?

If you are not going to change the furniture in the room in the near future, then you can choose curtains to match the color of the furniture. Now this technique is one of the most popular among designers. In this case, you should choose the color of the curtains the same as the color of the furniture, or it should be as close as possible.

A great option is curtains in neutral tones. It can be sand, beige, cream, or natural shade. Such curtains always look beautiful and unobtrusive.

If the interior of the room is made in one color, then the curtains should slightly set off the overall background. In other words, you should choose curtains of color so that they do not blend in with the furniture and wallpaper. It is best to choose curtains two or three shades lighter or darker than the interior of the room.

Two-tone curtains are also popular – they go well with the color scheme of any room.

Pro Secrets You Should Know

To visually add warmth to the room, it is best to hang curtains in warm colors: light green, yellow, brown, beige, gold, orange, yellow-green… If the room faces the north, then this is simply an irreplaceable option. In addition, warm colors visually bring the window closer and larger.

As for cool colors (blue, cyan, lilac, neon, sapphire, turquoise), they are perfect for those rooms that face the sunny side. The cool color scheme of the curtains creates a feeling of coolness and visually distances the window.

To prevent the window from appearing narrow and small, hang the curtains on the cornice. But keep in mind that the cornice should protrude beyond the window frame by about 20–25 cm on both sides.

High ceilings can be visually reduced with curtains that hang at window level. It’s even better if they are bright, active colors. You can use lambrequins or tassels as an addition. They, like color, distract attention from high walls.

If the window in the room is low in relation to the ceiling, then the cornice must be raised as high as possible, and the curtains must be hung so that they touch the floor. This will visually lengthen the window and make it taller.

Curtains for different rooms: what to consider when choosing

1. Bedroom

Choose curtains in colors so that they do not stand out from the overall picture of the interior. Pay attention to calmer and unobtrusive tones – they will create a quiet, comfortable environment.

2. Living room

Here the curtains should be plain in a classic style. An excellent addition to such curtains would be lambrequins, tassels, and eyelets. And if you don’t like details, hang regular curtains, but they should have a formal look.

3. Kitchen

Focus not so much on beautiful curtains, but on practical and functional curtains. They should be made of durable material that is easy to wash.

Personally, I like sheer or light-colored curtains, and blinds or Roman shades are also good. Remember about colors: red helps awaken the appetite, while blue, on the contrary, suppresses it.

4. Study or library

In an office or library, curtains should look solid, suit the work environment, and at the same time create a cozy space. Dark green, emerald, dark beige, chocolate, and burgundy curtains made of thick fabric in a classic style are suitable.

5. Children’s

Bright, light curtains with a cheerful and fairy-tale print are ideal for a child’s room. Just keep in mind: these curtains should be made of durable fabric because they often get dirty and washed.
