2023/2024 Trends: Studiopepe Tufted Carpets

Arianna Lelli Mami and Chiara Di Pinto, Milan-based design studio Studiopepe, presented the first collection of tufted carpets for the Muuto brand, using as a starting point the traits characteristic of both Scandinavian and Italian design: high-quality materials, graphic forms, and simple yet interesting accents.

The collection was called Relevo, which means “relief” in Latin, because of the subtle embossed patterns on the surface of the carpets, repeating their outlines. This geometry was influenced by the land art movement when giant earthworks appeared in the 1960s and 70s created by artists such as Robert Smithson, Michael Heizer, and Andy Goldsworthy. “The soaring lines of Relevo were inspired by land art and it’s sometimes winding, hypnotic paths through the soil,” the designers say.

To form the “grooves” in the carpets, the New Zealand wool on their surface is cut by hand to the desired length, creating a sense of visual depth and adding play of tones to monochrome designs. Choose from white, clay, sage green, and dark green. Each one is expressive enough to be the focal point of a room, yet subdued enough to blend in with a variety of decor styles. Carpets are available in two sizes.
