How to make a canopy with your own hands: 7 ideas that will delight you

The canopy creates a relaxed atmosphere both in the room and outside. How to make it yourself and which one is better to choose? In our selection of 7 beautiful ideas and useful tips.

Canopy in the bedroom

1. Canopy on suspended frames

In this relaxed boho-style bedroom, frames are made from bamboo and suspended from ropes from the ceiling. Light tulle was chosen as the fabric for the canopy – it can be tied into knots or unraveled, depending on the time of day and your desire.

If you want to repeat this example, it is not necessary to look for bamboo frames. Any wood or hollow tubes will do, but thin ones are preferred. Also, do not choose a dense heavy fabric – the mount will not withstand it.

2. Canopy on wooden beams

In this bedroom, the fabric is hung from wooden beams in the ceiling. To make a similar design, you need to attach the beams to the ceiling around the perimeter of the bed (mark the place for the beams with gaps a little further than the perimeter of the bed, so as not to get confused in meters of fabric while lying on it), and hang the fabric. Preferably linen or cotton – not completely transparent, but not heavy either. You can make beams like cornices to push the canopy apart if desired.

3. Canopy on vertical racks

This is a variant of the classic canopy when a rectangular frame is fixed on four “columns”. Some manufacturers and brands have such beds – you just have to choose the right fabric and hang it like a curtain. You can also simply throw the canopy fabric over the frame, this will create a relaxed atmosphere – just what you need for sleep. Choose textiles that suit your style: for example, linen and cotton look good in modern, Scandinavian, or nautical-style bedrooms. And organza and satin are ideal for classic bedrooms.

Sometimes racks are decorated with garlands or artificial plants.

4. Canopy – “sail”

This is the name of the curtains that hang from the ceiling above the bed. The fabric is fixed on two crossbars at the top, and depending on the length and type of material, it either falls down onto the bed or hangs over it. It is not difficult to repeat such a canopy in your apartment – just fix two slats on the ceiling and choose the fabric you like.

5. Canopy with dome

Perhaps this is the most popular type of canopy. It can be fixed above the bed, in the middle, or thus decorate the headboard – it depends on your preferences. The frame of the dome can be a hoop – it is enough to fix the fabric on the hoop and lift it on a rope. Then you get a dome.

For a nursery, such a canopy is the most popular option; it is also easy to make it yourself. You just have to look for a hoop of small diameter or take, for example, a sewing ring. Choose light-flowing fabrics and improvise with canopy decor: you can hang paper garlands, toys, or lanterns.

Outdoor canopies

1. Canopy cone for a balcony

Why not make a canopy on an open balcony? It will help protect against insects and create a special atmosphere of comfort. The easiest way to make a canopy with a dome is to fix it on the ceiling of the balcony with a hook.

2. Canopy in the recreation area in the country

The outdoor seating area is the best solution for summer. To hide from the bright sun and insects, make a canopy.

If you have a bed on an open terrace, place 4 posts connected by a frame around it and hang a light tulle over the bed.

With a canopy, you can arrange sun loungers in the country. If they stand on a terrace or in the shade of trees, the canopy hook can be attached to the ceiling or a branch. You can also stretch the rope between the trees – and fix the canopy hook on it.

What do you need to make a canopy yourself?

The standard set of tools and things for creating a canopy looks something like this:

  • the fabric of the desired length, choose a length of at least 2 meters;
  • frame materials – wooden beams or hollow pipes;
  • hoop – for a cornice in the form of a cone;
  • hook and rope – to hang the conical cornice from the ceiling;
  • roof rails – for fastening canopies – “sails”;
  • fasteners: self-tapping screws and dowels.

In general, the process is divided into three stages:

  1. sewing a canopy of the desired shape and size,
  2. assembling and fixing of the structure for canopies,
  3. fixing the fabric on the cornice.
