Warmth, nostalgia and wanderlust: 2024’s colour trends are like a comforting embrace

Colour trends are a fickle beast to predict. But if anyone is up for the job, it has to be the Dulux colour team, which celebrates 25 years of its annual Colour Trend Forecast this year. If it seems like the design world is awash in a certain kind of nostalgia, you wouldn’t be wrong. In a pivot away from the cool greens, pastel tones and stark white minimalism of last year’s Dulux forecast, this year sees an embrace of warmer, positive and more nostalgic colour palettes.

Divided by the Dulux Colour Team into three distinct colour palettes: Solstice, Journey and Muse, 2024’s palette is defined by its more sophisticated mid-tones which evoke a sense of sentimental warmth. “There is a really important element to this year’s forecast in the way it invites colour and texture into the home,” explains Dulux’s colour and communications manager Andrea Lucena-Orr, who led a colour team including colour forecaster and stylist Bree Leech and Dulux’s colour manager Lauren Treloar.

Each year’s Dulux’s colour team combs a wide range of resources to come up with their annual prediction. “The team is informed by seminars, including Future Laboratory London and Colour Hive, [and] Milan Design Week,” says Treloar. “We also dissect trend reports and editorials, attend fashion catwalks, product and design launches, engage with global and international brands, and review customised research through Dulux’s extensive networks in the UK, Italy and France.”

Solstice

Marked by a toasty embrace of warm tones—think rich browns, clay, warm neutrals and pops of golden yellow that pair well with natural stone, ceramic and highly textured fabrics, Solstice was inspired by Scandi style, as well as a Mediterranean and desert influence.

Journey

Inspired by wanderlust and cultures far and wide, Journey’s palette is heavy with rich mid-tone hues with yellow green at the heart, as well as decadent reds for contrast. “Journey celebrates the art of storytelling, where mythical iconography and cherished folk aesthetics find their rightful place, adding layers of depth and colour to your space,” says Lucena-Orr.

Muse

If you hadn’t already noticed, the ’70s is back—and in a big way. This sense of nostalgia and embrace of our postmodern past is at the core of Muse, which is fused with vintage pieces and design icons updated into a contemporary setting. Feeding back into our increased desire for sustainability, Muse asks us to balance past and present.
