Architect Nikita Morozov explains how to expand the space with color, texture, and lighting, and why it is better to plan the walls, not the floor.
The smaller the bathroom, the more minimalistic its design should be. Together with the architect Nikita Morozov, we figured out what can still be left in plain sight, what plumbing to choose and how to arrange it in a cramped and even more combined bathroom.
1. Choose the color and texture
If you want to visually enlarge a small space, don’t use overly dark or bright colors. Large patterns and ornaments are also contraindicated. Choose small mosaic tiles or plaster with a fine-textured stripe. Moreover, vertical stripes will “raise” the ceiling, and horizontal stripes will “stretch” the walls.
2. Compact and corner plumbing – your choice
Instead of standard-sized plumbing, it’s best to look for a compact option. The main thing is to check in advance whether it is convenient for you personally. In addition, in a small space, you cannot afford the luxury of unused corners. Therefore, pay attention to corner plumbing: a bath, a sink, or both together.
3. Make a wall plan instead of a floor plan.
If the area of the room is minimal, then it is not worth drawing up a floor plan, as we usually do, but a wall plan. Hang anything you can: toilet and sink, cabinets, shelves, and cabinets. Use the full height of the walls. So the bathroom will remain functional, but at the same time, the space will look lighter and freer.
4. Hide everything you can
The more objects are in sight, the more cluttered and cramped the bathroom will seem. If possible, hide all pipes and communications. Plan enough cabinets and shelves to hide all the cosmetics and household chemicals you need. And the facades in the color of the walls will visually increase the space.
5. Add light
The more corners are lit, the more spacious the room appears. Therefore, do not feel sorry for spot illumination. Do not forget about mirrors – they not only visually expand the space by themselves but also reflect light.
