10 stunning museums will open in 2023

In 2023, it is planned to open many new museums built by the world’s best architectural firms. Among them are the long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, which took two decades to complete and will house the country’s treasure trove of ancient antiquities, and Studio Gang’s Cave Museum of Natural History in New York.

Great Egyptian Museum, Cairo, Egypt

The museum has been under construction for 20 years, and after several missed opening dates, the world’s largest archaeological complex plans to finally open to the public in 2023. Outstanding exhibits include Tutankhamun’s treasures, pharaonic art, and 100,000 ancient artifacts. The monolithic building of the Grand Egyptian Museum was designed by Heneghan Peng Architects, using the pyramid motif from the nearby Giza complex.

Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education and Innovation, New York, USA

Created by Studio Gang, this extension of the American Museum of Natural History in New York is amorphous in shape. There are about 21,400 sq. meters of exhibition space dedicated to insects and microscopic creatures, including prehistoric ones. The vivarium will contain 80 species of butterflies. The architecture is built on organically shaped cavern-like openings that open up to a view of the entire atrium.

Manchester Museum, Manchester, UK

Purcell’s London practice has designed a two-story addition to the museum’s 130-year-old Neo-Gothic building. The free volume, lined with green-glazed terracotta tiles, will house a new exhibition hall for temporary exhibitions and a gallery dedicated to South Asia.

Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, USA

Michael Maltzan Architecture is leading the museum’s expansion and renovation on Wilshire and Westwood Boulevards. After 20 years of negotiations, they added a new building called the Linda and Stuart Resnick Cultural Center, with an impressive white entrance and a 3,700 sq. m. gallery. m. All this splendor is united by an open terrace with sculptures and a new restaurant under the direction of Alice Waters and David Tanis.

Art Museum, Busan, Korea

Design company D’strict is renovating a Busan factory into an immersive exhibition of nature-inspired video art using projection, 3D, light, sound, and ASMR. Visitors will be able to purchase the artwork as NFTs. The firm is also working on its first international office in Hong Kong, which will open in early 2024.

Museum of the Holocaust in Toronto, Canada

Reich + Petch, known for its museum projects, is overhauling an existing museum founded 35 years ago by Holocaust survivors in a huge new building north of downtown. The exhibitions will be relevant and exciting to reach out to a new generation that has less and less opportunity to connect with the survivors of this tragedy every year.

Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw, Poland

Ten years ago, New York-based studio Thomas Phifer and Partners were invited to Warsaw to spearhead the construction of a four-story complex next to the Soviet-era Palace of Science and Culture. The modernist concrete structure, located half underground, will become a cultural center with workshops, lectures, a cinema, and an auditorium.

Art Museum Buffalo AKG, Buffalo, USA

Dutch company OMA is restoring the famous Albright-Knox Gallery in a nearby parking lot as the Buffalo Gallery rebrands itself for the new era. The new building will be an open, transparent, multi-faceted space designed to be more welcoming and inclusive of community residents, with a winding boardwalk and public foyer.

Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh, Scotland

The new space below the existing William Henry Playfair Gallery will feature the work of William McTaggart, Anne Redpath, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Phoebe Anna Traquair, and more. Hoskins Architects has embarked on a project that will create new traffic routes from the historic building to Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens.

White Cube, New York, USA

For the gallery’s 30th anniversary, White Cube will open its first New York City outpost in a 1930 building on the Upper East Side in the fall of 2023. Nearby are the Met, Frick, and Guggenheim museums.
